it's all about what kind of jacket you're into. i bought a gap 3/4 length car coat a few years ago... it's very thick, hard leather, but that's what i like. guess makes some really soft leather ones, if you're into that... i would go to a burlington coat factory type of place and see what's available. be prepared to spend a couple bills on a good jacket, though (the bad ones smell like... well, they smell pretty awful :))

I don't know how you can "tell" if the price is good...I just shopped around for a long time before I bought one...just know what you want (cut, length, color, leather type), and keep your eyes out for them when you're shopping. I picked up a 3/4ths length Gap black leather one a few years ago at the outlet ($40!), since it was the design I wanted, but then I found one that was plush enough for me...picked up a nice Andrew Marc.

Just take your time, since you're right in being wary of getting something that you didn't really want. And make sure you're honest about how well you'll take care of it...my second coat, will be babied since the leather's really soft and would scratch easily. Whereas, my first one is folded up and tossed around. :)

I'd do like EvilYoda did and try a Gap Outlet first. You might get lucky like he did and find one for under $100. That way you can try them out and see what you like.

I've always liked Ken Cole Lamb Skin's but they'll cost you a lot...

are you looking bomber or 3/4 length. i personally like lamb skin, it's softer but you have to be more careful with it. i got mine at 3/4 robinsons/may for $150 with a sale and coupons. decent deal i guess for a jacket.

Too bad I don't got a bike yet... :(

Lambskins are just awesome in how soft they are. I have a 3/4 brown lambskin carcoat and it rocks. Like dolph said, do not get a cheapo one cuz they DO smell! I'd check out Kenneth Cole, J.Crew, Andrew Marc, basically just walk into a department store like Macy's, BLoomingdales, and try stuff out. You'll spend like ~$300 or more on a good comfortable jacket though.

As a side note, I've been lookin for a brad pitt Fight Club colored leather jacket for like 1.5 years and still haven't found a good one, wat's up with that?
