I have 7 domains registered at Yahoo. Very easy, and full featured. Cost is $35 a year tho, but no biggie. I will take high cost more reliability then low cost, sucky reliablity :)

To register a domain go for the cheapest price.

Hosting is a different story.
Get a friend at a isp to point the domain to your ip and run it from your house.

I disagree 100%,what happens when your cheap register folds and you have problems with your domain. I recommend register.com or pair.com

As far as hosting it goes, I prefer something more reliable than hosting it at my house (not to mention it might violate your TOS and get you shutdown, assuming port 80 is open in the first place). I once again highly recommend www.pair.com Go read about their network, uptime, and pricing. It cant be beat.

appearently I thought I knew more about this than what I did.... I don't understand the hosting side of it???

I have a adsl connection through SBC southwestern bell can't I just use my computer?

does anybody know any informational topics on this issue and just having a website in general?

Read your terms of service with your ISP, most explicitly forbid running any sort of server on your connection. Many broadband providers even block port 80 at the routers to cut down on IIS worms clogging traffic. I'm pretty sure the whole Charter pipeline is that way now....

Also what happens when your dsl goes down or something? I pay $10 a month, my server is always up, its really worth it to me because of the headaches it saves

I highly doubt you'll be able to host your website with your DSL connection.

You can still get a good deal on domain registration and hosting read this. I'm going to PM you a special link to dixiesys.com which gets you 3Gig transfer, 25 POP e-mail addresses and more for $19.95 a year.

But at $1.66 / month are they making money or losing it? How many of the under-$10 hosting companies from a year ago are still in business?

I'm not flaming, and at that price it's probably worth taking a chance, especially if the $8.33 / month difference is enough to matter to you and if they have the scripting options you want (probably perl). I'm also not pushing softcom or giving a referral link, I've just been satisfied with them.

Actually I think it's 5Gig transfer a month, I dunno I'm confused.

Oh and the URL I PM'd him wasn't a "referral" URL, I get nothing out of it.

sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that yours was, just that I wasn't :)

Soy: He does not seem to be looking for a professional solution. He is "trying to build a website" as he says.

Nothing better then having your data LOCAL. Period.

If you're buying a domain I call it professional enough to pay $5 a month for a good host :)

<< Register it at Godaddy.com cheap and good. >>

Yup.

And then host it at Readyhosting.com for under $10/mo. And yes, they've been in business for more than a year. They've actually IMPROVED service... go figure. They are ideal for personal/non-commerce websites.

Pay anything more for a personal site and you're just wasting your money. The downtime has been extremely minimal.

Glad we agree then ;) I'll still whore for pair.com again, they've been open since 96 so I trust them more than a place thats been open a year. Some really large sites like toms hardware host with them (at least he used to I know). I just couldnt ask for better.

I'd love to work there just to be on their backbone:

UUnet - OC-3c and DS-3
Sprint - OC-3c and DS-3
Digex/Intermedia - DS-3
SAVVIS - DS-3
Genuity (formerly GTE/BBNplanet) - DS-3
Global Crossing - DS-3
Cable & Wireless - DS-3
AT&T - DS-3
Yipes! - Fast Ethernet (in use with PitX)

Which plan did you go for? How much are you paying per month with pair.com? I consider $30/mo. to be a lot for non-business... r u a business?

Thanks for all your help, thanks Rossman for the PM that seems like I really good deal. I'll probably jump on it in the next day or two, once I catch up in my classes anyway that way I don't spend all my time playing....
