3. ask if any severance pay is forthcoming

If you're getting fired, there's no chance you'll get any sort of severance. If you're getting laid off, however, that's a different story.

Lean across the desk and pimp slap your boss. Then punch yourself a half dozen times, make sure you aim for the eyes and nose. Finish it by throwing yourself against all the book shelves.

You're not supposed to talk about that! 😉

don't forget to get your 401(k) information
Good point.

Then (if there is enough money) have the company write a check to vanguard.com so you can set up a Rollover IRA and buy VFINX, VEURX, VEIEX and retire happy 🙂

it might vary by state.... but i think that your final paycheck should be available to you the day you leave.

I know that's not the case in Ohio.

It was also not the case at any of the jobs I worked in Indiana, New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Edit: Then again I wasn't fired from those jobs. But I'm not sure why they'd circumvent the normal payroll process to do that.

It's a good idea if you can ask the boss if you can put down that you resigned instead of them firing you

That would mean he couldn't get unemployment.

If he was fired for cause he probably couldn't get unemployment either. I'd hope he doesn't ask to resign rather than getting laid off, because getting laid off does not reflect poorly on you.

I hope I don't get fired, but I might. 🙁

So, I am sitting here making a list of what I need to do and what I need to ask my employer about if this happens. Could you guys and gals help me improve the list?

I know it's a bad idea to only consult ATOT. Don't worry, I'm using other resources too.

1. Ask about final paycheck...when is firm termination date, what is my last day to be paid
2. make sure address on file is correct to mail final paycheck
3. ask if any severance pay is forthcoming
4. find out situation w/ health insurance...gather info about COBRA
5. ask superiors and coworkers if they will serve as a positive reference
6. ?

Thanks!

Profit???

You can resign AND get it in writing that your company will not contest the unemployment claim - best of both worlds.
