Things to do when you get fired

I hope I don't get fired, but I might. 🙁

So, I am sitting here making a list of what I need to do and what I need to ask my employer about if this happens. Could you guys and gals help me improve the list?

I know it's a bad idea to only consult ATOT. Don't worry, I'm using other resources too.

1. Ask about final paycheck...when is firm termination date, what is my last day to be paid
2. make sure address on file is correct to mail final paycheck
3. ask if any severance pay is forthcoming
4. find out situation w/ health insurance...gather info about COBRA
5. ask superiors and coworkers if they will serve as a positive reference
6. ?

Thanks!

I know that's not the case in Ohio.

Heh yeah I just searched, I'll look at those threads, and skip the parts about taking a dump in my bosses coffee 😛

Thx!

Backup all your email and other PC files to some type of external device. When they let you go here, you get no chance to log into your PC and get important files, addresses, messages, etc. It is all considered company property.

I carry an external HDD that I keep all that stuff on, so I can just pack it with my other belongings if that day should ever come.

yup. i know that's true for California and Colorado, but it's not the case for most states

Make sure you will be paid for unused vacation time. If you don't know how much you have, find out before Firing Day.

Don't assume you can walk out with a flash key, ipod/mp3 player or external drive. It may be confiscated and wiped of any company data. Addresses of personal contacts and other non-proprietary information should be brought home now, and printed out in case they go completely nuts and demand to sanitize your PC.

Does this only apply when you are fired? I quit and gave two weeks notice and received my last pay check when I would have if I were still employed there.
