Things to do in San Francisco for a day

what will you recommend as the absolute must see things or things to do in San Francisco...for a first time visitor who will be spending a day there
 
Walk on the ocean side of the penninsula, see the WW2 gun placements. See both bridges, walk across the Golden Gate. If you've never seen Redwoods, go to Muir Woods.

Yep. Pier 39 is a touristy place as well.
Try visiting Sausalito across the gate as well. Also the sights off the Marin Headlands are amazing. Drive along Highway 1 north of the gate. As someone mentioned above, Muir woods is a great place to hike.

Hopefully it won't rain when you're here.
 
Screw the touristy stuff. The pier is kinda blah. They have some decent places to eat though.

Check out golden gate park - lots of stuff there. Check out the palace of fine arts and the exploratorium.

There's lots to do.
