Things to do in Pittsburg?

I'm traveling to Pittsburg for an interview, and I'm going to end up staying there from about Thursday to Saturday. I'm only going to be doing things during Thursday and Friday during the day, so I'm going to have a bunch of free time.

Can anyone suggest some good/fun things to do in Pittsburg? Sights (non-boring) to see, places to go, etc?

These are all in or very near the downtown area: Visit Station Square, ride the Incline, check out the Carnegie Science Center, go to the Strip District (best on Saturday morning when it's packed, and have a famous Primanti Bros. sandwich), see the Fort Pitt Museum and Blockhouse.

In the Oakland area, about 6 miles east of downtown: Carnegie Museum, U. of Pittsburgh and the Cathedral of Learning (a skyscraper on a college campus). Oakland will have a bunch of drunken college students on the weekend if that's your thing.

The South Side has lots of great little bars with live bands that play too loud. There will be a lot of partying there on the weekend too, but it's not all college-age.

What kind of restaurants do you like? Are you driving? If so, do you have a good map? If so, can you handle having a bit of trouble getting around? (Not traffic, just wacky road systems)

I think there's a Pittsburg, Kansas, too.

Lots of stuff in Pittsburgh, PA. Could have caught da Stillers game against da Brownies.

Kranky hit the basics ....

Now I'm starting to miss Pittsburgh. NY will just never be "home". At least I can stream Myron Cope over the internet and download Quinn for evening listening.

Pittsburgh sucks.

It's better than New Jersey. :p

I lived in Pittsburgh for awhile before moving to NJ 2yrs ago. NJ itself is boring for sure but at least it's close to NYC, Philly, and has many beaches and a good economy. Pittsburgh's got nothing. The city is depressed. Economy sucks there. People there seems depressed and angry.

I guess it depends on who you meet. I find the people here overwhelmingly nice. Glad you found a place you're happier with.

Damn that looks good

The next time I go visit corporate in Pittsburgh, I'm definitely going to try them out. Where are they in relation to the Omni Hotel downtown?

EDIT: ahh, there's one just on the other side the of allegheny near corporate HQ :D

That's because PennDOT has the traffic all screwed up. And I hate the freakin' tunnels.

The economy there does suck. I don't know how Tom Murphy gets elected.

But I place the blame of everything firmly on the tunnels. :p

I used to live outside of Greensburg and Latrobe. So to get downtown, I'd take the pike, then the parkway. I could make it to the airport in 35-40 minutes with no traffic (I did it once at 3AM). Monday morning for an 8AM flight, takes me 2 hours to get through. Darn Squirrel Hill tunnel. :|

If that's your only chance to go, OK, but if you have a choice, go to the original Primanti's which is on 18th St in the Strip District. It's walkable (but a long walk) from the Omni. If you're driving, go north on Grant (one side of the Omni borders Grant) for about three blocks until it ends at Liberty (where the Greyhound station is). Bear right onto Liberty, look for 18th St on your left (about 8 blocks).

The original Primanti's is open 24 hours and has a lot more "atmosphere".

I guess I'm too late but...

First thing to do, learn to spell Pittsburgh correctly.
Second, ignore all the fools suggesting Primanti brothers. I hate that place, as does almost everyone else I know.
Third, I live in Pittsburgh and have lived here all my life. That said, I can't really think of anything extraordinarily fun to do in this city that doesn't exist in every other major city. The city has a distinctive look to it with the rivers and the bridges, but as far as activities go, it doesn't really have much of a personality. Don't get me wrong, I like living here and all, just that I can't really think of a main attraction that would draw someone to the city.
