I'm in the car posting on my laptop tethered to my Sprint Mogul that's connected to the Spring EVDO network. Awesome. But kinda slow. And my lappy's battery sucks. I'm with my dad and relatives heading to Charleston for about two days.

Anything to do?

I would personally like to see something like an old school galleon or schooner, the ones with the sails and masts and stuff. Other things to see would be fine.

As for food, we don't want anything upscale, luxurious, expensive, etc. Just regular cuisine like fresh seafood (not the breaded and fried kind) or real smoked-for-hours-and-hours barbeque. A good seafood buffet would be great ;) Or anything else that you guys think would be good. I'm trying to go through review websites but there's just so many places to look through, and some websites don't filter restaurants by price ><

First thing you'll wanna do is leave NC and drive to SC, since that's where Charleston & Folly Beach are...

There is so much to do down there. If this is your first time, go downtown and just walk around.

Folly is a great place by itself. Very low key and sloooow pace.

Yea change your topic title, they're in SC, not NC.

As far as what to do...get you some BBQ across the river at Melvins in Mt. P. Classic BBQ joint, been around for years. Take a tour of the Yorktown, big old WWII carrier sitting in the harbor. You could walk across the bridge from there if it's not too cold...really good views of the Charleston harbor. Of course you'll wanna park the car a little closer to the foot of the bridge. If you can make it over to Sullivan's island you could take a tour of Ft Moultrie/Ft Sumter.

In Charleston:

Walk down King St. Tons of shops, restaurants. Yo Burrito is cheap decent food on one of the side streets.

Walk down Market St. Take a carriage tour if you want, pretty interesting history lesson for 15 bucks.

Go down to waterfront park. Walk along the Battery.

On Folly:

Walk on the beach!

I'm marking this for later.

We're planning for a spring trip to check out the light houses of the outerbanks NC and then go down to Charleston SC to see touristy/historic areas. Can't wait for the weather to warm up.

Fixed state. Unfortunately, I'm with family, so no get-togethers. Gotta spend time with the parentals, and it's my Dad's birthday tomorrow.

Any place with large amounts of seafood for a good price? I'm sure some of you read my seafood buffet thread from a few days ago.

Try "The Wreck". It's where the locals go fo seafood. Cash only.

Good luck finding it though, it is hidden for a reason as it is the best seafood for locals.

We went to Melvin's this afternoon and it was REALLY good. The pulled pork was amazing. Finally got myself a taste of Carolina style ribs. I'm interested in "The Wreck" but I don't feel comfortable taking my family there. By some online accounts it seems like it has gone downhill during the years.

Besides this, we didn't do much else. Saw the Yorktown. Tried to find the fishing/crabbing pier on Folly Island but it was closed for renovations. Any other crabbing piers? My uncle wants to catch some crabs. Or maybe some seafood markets that sell fresh seafood like crabs at good prices?

Just got back. It was uneventful because it was with family and everyone was clueless of what to do. Everyone but me was complaining about the cold. If I were by myself I could have found tons of stuff to do, but alas, visiting with family doesn't afford me the needed freedom.

We got some take-out lunch at the Noisy Oyster, one of those restaurants that's advertised in the tourist pamphlets and stuff. It was pretty mediocre.

Crab Cakes? Tasted exactly like dry stuffing left over from Thanksgiving mixed with some of that cheap canned crab meat.
Oyster Po-Boy? Got 6 breaded and fried oysters, which were good by themselves due to their natural oyster goodness. But this was eclipsed by the huge tasteless bun and huge slices of tomato, with no sandwich sauce.
Carolina Red Rice that came with the dishes? Decent. Had some chunks of sausage, but it was only a small scoop.

Each dish was $9. Rip-off.

We tried some seafood markets, including the Mt. Pleasant Seafood Market, but prices were really bad and the selection was meager. Their tuna fillets were turning brown... fresh tuna is supposed to be a pretty translucent red.

I need to come back on my own to truly experience Charleston. This locale has definitely ranked pretty high on my list of metropolitan areas I like.

Heh, I wasn't the one complaining about the cold. A week ago I was sleeping and photographing in 15 degree weather in the southwest. I loved it. The whole "we can't do anything, it's too cold" thing really got to me. We're in Charleston! It ain't cold! It you want cold go to the high country in Colorado or Utah or something.

That place closed AFAIK.

Head for the tourist trap of Shem Creek for seafood.

I am in Charlotte with my dad, cousin, aunt, and uncle. I'll be leaving to go back to Phoenix on Sunday. On Monday I actually have an internship interview/company visit with a company in Phoenix (Avnet). And then it's on my return trip - White Sands and someplace with lots of birds. I don't remember the name.

Anthony Bourdain did an episode there recently where he went to this BBQ place outside of the city that was supposed to be the best on Earth. I'm sure a lot of people make that claim but the chef did really have a good system going.

If you are traveling via Tucson and have a few hours the Desert Museum is great. If you don't have that much time but have a hour or so then the San Xavier de Bac mission, just off of I-19 is worth a visit. Also, Mexican food in Tucson is very good. Let me know if you want a list of places to eat.
