Things to do in Cape Cod?

I'm trying to plan a vacation for my famiy but these websites just suck with slew of indeterminate info.

Maybe I should ask for some word of mouth.

What's it there to do besides beaches? What are some nice sightseeing places? How's Martha's Vineyard?

GOto the Ocean Spray Cranberry factory 🙂

Goto Plymouth Rock.

Just driving the Cape itself is fun and you'll see some amazing sights

Nice! Maybe they can even visit the Cape Cod potato ship factory too...

Anything else? What do you do in Martha's Vineyard?

You can go to Plimouth Plantation. It's kind of interesting, but really better if you have kids with you.

You can go to Plymouth and see the rock, throw coins at it, if one sticks that's supposed to be good luck. 🙂 You can take a look at the Mayflower II, again more interesting for the kids.

The National Marine Life Center is interesting.

There's the Pilgrim Monument and Museum in Provincetown.

Lots of whale watching tours available.

Lots of good biking. There's the Cape Cod Rail Trail, the Canal Bikeway, the Shining Sea Bikeway, and the Provincelands for something different. There a link to them HERE

Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are great for biking too. You can also rent mopeds on Martha's Vineyard if you want, I'm not sure about Nantucket. Lots of shopping on both islands. Moshup Beach and Gay Head on Martha's Vineyard are nice.

Lots of good antique shopping all over Cape Cod if you like that sort of thing. Not a lot of bargains though.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is interesting. You'll probably want to take the ferry from there to Martha's Vineyard anyway.

There are a couple of places on Martha's Vineyard where you can go horseback riding.

You can rent sailboats, take lessons, or charter a sailboat cruise on Nantucket. There are also a couple of seal cruise places on Nantucket.

When all else fails you can always join a clambake on the beach at night.

It's a really laid back place with nice people. The only place I've seen any problems is Hyannis. I came out of a movie theater there one night and several cars in the parking lot had their windows knocked out and things lying out in the seats had been stolen.

I go for the biking, beaches, seafood, antiques and crafts shopping, but especially the biking.

This post is going to be mostly negative as I live on Cape:

If going on the weekend, the traffic is going to suck. Everywhere. Period. And god forbids is rains...If driving down (or up), try to come over the Bourne Bridge as less people usually come that way.

Please know where you are going, SOME (not all) can't stand tourists and would give them directions to the Canal tunnel if they would believe it (BTW, it's located by the train bridge 😉)

Don't depend on the "mass transit" setup down here. It runs once an hour and usually doesn't go where you want to go.

If you see a seafood restaurant, you are required to stop and get some fish 'n chips with a bowl of clam chowder. Aviod the chain places, go for the local stuff (with the exception of Seafood Sams, they're pretty good)

As for stuff to do, I wouldn't know as it's the summer season so I get to work 65-70 hours a week...except on my day off, and then it's kayaking as much as I can

Whale Watch, Pirates Cove (awesome mini-golf place), go karts in bourne, check out a restaurant called The Frontier-they have good prime rib/lobster specials, and the cinnamon bread is awesome!

I used to hit up Cape Cod all the time since my college was around 20 minutes away 😛

I used to go visit my uncle's summer cottage in Brewster.
Go whale watching (no, not Ted Kennedy's fat nude ass in Hyannis 😛)
Eat lots of lobster and clam chowder.
P-TOWN!!!- if you wanna try an alternative lifestyle😉. Lotsa beds and breakfasts there.

and make sure it's Cod

and you gotta have steamed clams and lobster too

which means you're going to be hella fat when you're done

Like PaulNEPats said, go play mini golf at Pirates Cove. You could also head out to the Marconi station in Welfleet, or spend a day in Chatham or Provincetown.

When are you planning on going? Many places here shut down on labor day or shortly after.

lots of good info about cape cod in this thread. usually when I go i just check out the beaches, so I'll check this thread again next time I go

My grandfather was one of the ones who helped design both the Bourne and Sagamore 🙂.

Oh and you gotta go fishing. Stellwagon bank isn't to far from the cape and there's Tuna out there right now. You can also get cod, blue fish, and sea bass as well. Caught a 30 lb bass on Saturday 😀 (gotta be out there early early like 5-6am for the morning bite.) You can also go whale watching. I've seen on average 20 whales over a period of an hour or so while out there. Humpbacks and Minkey mostly but still cool when they surface 10 feet away from your boat! And if you get lucky you will get to see them while they feed.

Well depends how far down the cape you are going. If you are down towards sagamore, I would suggest walking around the canal, even fishing on the canal, some of the seafood places around. If you are going farther down towards wellfleet and truro, I'd say the best things are the beaches and golfing. The food down in provincetown is pretty good too (as long as you are not squimish to alternative lifestyles). Also if i remember there was a cool nautical museum down near truro. Also just a little fyi if you are down the cape and find a bar called the Bomb Shelter turn the other way and run away very fast.

*edit*
I also forgot. keep your eyes out for signs of local clam or lobster bakes. They are a great thing. PLus you get to meet some fun locals.
