i snorkeled/swam in a cenote and thought it was extremely overrated. i actually went into 2 different ones. 1 at xcaret (which was crowded as shit but it's a path you take as it's an underground river. but not nearly as cool as it sounds).

the other was above like the one in twinrider's pic. it was on some "aztec excursion" where we did the cenote, had some good food, and some other stuff. but the cenote part was so meh. the water is cold as shit, there is no life in the water (or if there is, it's just dinky little fish), and it's pretty dark down there. just extremely overrated imo.

there are some cool zipline trips though over there too. we did one that had food included at the end with free drinks, and you swam around in lagoons while they cooked us lunch. had a rope swing and innertubes cool. was pretty cool.

Go to Cozumel for a day. Snorkel off the south shore, great reefs. We stayed there a week and two days in Cancun, and would skip Cancun next time.

Stayed at the Coral Beach 15 years ago, and it's beautiful. You can't replicate Mexican luxury like that in the US. Was there this past summer, two nights at the Omni, 5 nights in Playa del Carmen. Top rec in Cancun: Lima 1205. Make sure you get the Ronda Fria.

Other than that a trip to Isla Mujeres to walk around and get away, and Puerto Morelos for snorkeling. Puerto Morelos was incredible, most of the reef was only 6-10 ft deep, many parts you're literally skimming above the reef, very unique, and cheap. We got lucky and had a solo tour for $25 pp. Just walk up and negotiate there at the dock. I'd also recommend bringing your own snorkeling gear. It's pretty gross to use the house stuff. Xcaret was great 15 yrs ago, and Xplor gets great reviews, but both are a bit too expensive and Disneylandy for my taste.

Obviously the ruins are a must do, but you already know that. Wish I had woken up earlier to do Coba. I'd recommend renting a car for some freedom. We found a ridiculous $3 a day rental, which came out to $15/day after loading up on insurance. Really worth it to explore Valladolid and smaller towns to and fro Chichen Itza.

If you're sick of the tourist food, Vips is across the street for breakfast. It's a very good Mexican chain and where you'll only find Mexicans eating.

You're crazy. Third week of March is college spring break.

"Honey, I heard Cancun is great that time of year, all the freshness of spring, quality weather and food. Oh just ignore the scantily clad coeds...." :shifty:

I miss Cozumel.
It's great. The state regulated taxis so they were reasonable. We paid a driver $20 to run us around the island, stopping at the various beaches and getting a feel for it.
I took an intro to diving course down at Chankanab park. Then I went to the reef with an instructor on a two tank trip.
Floating in the calm water in front of our hotel. High out of that salty water :)
It felt more like a vacation than anything before or since. Time just slows down out there.

Drink and have sex, optionally while on the beach. If you do anything else you are doing it wrong.

cruising the stores in Cancun with my wife, this young lady with a bud___wieser bikini and daisy dukes passes by. She looks at me and smiles and says "bud" and I finish with "wieser". Laughed out loud! Now it is our inside joke.
