Things to do in Asheville?

My first time -- I'm overwhelmed. I want to do everything!

Can anyone recommend any day hikes? Looks like there's so much nature down there... hard to pick. I'm an experienced hiker so challenging is fine if the views are worth it.

Any recommendations for downtown? Is there much to see outside of downtown? Is the Biltmore worth it?

If you like history the Biltmore is a good option but if you want Hikes then head to Pisgah National Forest or Blue Ridge Parkway.

We like the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway through Brevard, lots of waterfalls to find.

Go to the Twisted Crepe downtown for some good food! Brews Cruise for good craft beer or just go there yourself.

There is a lot but you can't go wrong really,

The beer & food scene in Asheville is awesome. There's a lot of shopping but it's mostly overpriced arts and crafts IIRC.

Asheville is somewhat near some of the amazing hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains. I think it's 60-80 minutes to some of the best hikes around there. Not sure if that's a bit beyond what you were thinking.

Awesome mountain biking and white water rafting in the area.

Beer and food scene is great as already mentioned. Lots of local breweries as well as several big craft brewers built regional breweries in the area (Oscar Blues, Sierra Nevada, etc.).

A super easy/short hike with beautiful views is Max Patch.

Asheville is awesome.
Smokey Mountains National park is amazing. Blue Ridge Parkway is fantastic.
Be careful if it's foggy, it can be very hard to see!

You might want to pick up a book on waterfalls. Of course, you'll be hiking around the national forest etc to get to them. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/North-Carolina-Waterfalls-Kevin-Adams/dp/0895876531

When you get to Asheville visit The Mast General Store. They should have books, maps and other resources (including gear etc) to help you plan your hikes etc. http://www.mastgeneralstore.com/asheville

Edit: Here are some of the waterfall/hiking guidebooks you can find at Mast: http://www.mastgeneralstore.com/books-music/maps-guides

Not sure how many days you have planned, but yeah, the Biltmore is worth a visit if you have interest in architecture or history. The indoor swimming pool with lighting (pool is drained obviously) along with the gardens, green house, etc. and Vanderbilt's ultimate mission are interesting since it originally comprised around 5,000 acres.

Peter Seller's last movie "Being There" was filmed at the Biltmore. Once you see the dining room, and then you see the fireplace that is about the size of your apartment/house you get the sense of scale.

Granted, I was staying in the Smokeys and drove down to see it. But it is dang impressive. One of those moments where it clicks "It would be dang near impossible to build this as-is in today's world."

Blue ridge parkway, Brevard, Pisgah

Here is a list of some waterfalls I compiled from several sources a while back: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byd8Gu6D4K5Lb09aQ2loWTl6cDg/view?usp=sharing (kml file, open in google earth)

I high recommend:
  • Skinny Dip Falls - Not too long of a walk
  • Courthouse Falls - Not too long of a walk as long as the road isn't closed (I haven't been since summer of 2014 when it was)
  • Looking Glass Falls - Right alongside the road
  • Rainbow Falls

The Biltmore will rock your world, although it's expensive. Do the house tour later in the day when it's not so packed. Sierra Nevada brewery too.

If you'd like to see a brewery doing some cool things check out New Belgium, they are completely off grid energy wise and recycle the heat from brewing etc. It's really beat stuff to see!

Asheville resident here. For hikes check out Dupont State Forest or head up through Brevard and check out a lot of the trail heads that start outside of town (Looking Glass is a good one). Panthertown Valley is a sorta of hidden hiking gem as well. The grounds at Biltmore are gorgeous and like everyone else said if you are fan of history definitely check it out. Grove Park is pretty cool too (and free to get into).

This is the land of breweries. Some recommendations are:

Greenman.. They just tapped a bunch of cellared beer in celebration of their 20th anniversary. They've got verticals of their holiday Holly King and their stout Dweller (and bourbon aged Demon Dweller) on right now. Both are high ABV so beware. And both are awesome.

Burial: Just damn good beer, all the time. They do a lot of saisons which is a style I don't like but anything they do is going to be good.

Funkatorium: If you like sour beer check this place out. It's an off-shoot of Wicked Weed (the brewery that just sold out to In-Bev). The main Wicked Weed brew pub is a tourist trap but the Funk is a cool spot to chill and get a good sour in.

Those 3 are probably my favorite. You can get New Belgium and Seirra Nevada stuff anywhere so I tend not to hit those places up too often. That said, both put a lot of work into their space and if you have the time definitely check it out. Plenty of other breweries as well. Hi-Wire, Twin Leaf, Catawba, AVL Brewing company, One World (cool little hangout place), Lexington Ave Brewing (meh), Bhramari to just name a few. And they are all pretty much within walking distance of each other.

Lots of good music venues here. Jump online and see if anyone interesting is playing at Salvage Station, Grey Eagle, The Orange Peel, AVL Music Hall, etc

Edit: It's kinda cheesy but consider doing the La Zoom bus tour. It's pretty damn amusing and it'll give you a good layout of the town, what breweries you might want to hit up, etc.

Burial, Green Man, and Funkatorium are also a block from each other. Easy to do all three.

heh, first thing that came to mind when I saw thread title:

"Hey OP, can you drop by Worthington's place, pick up his unwanted Kuro, and bring it back to my place in MD?" (Assuming you still have it...)

:D

--Oh, 2nd Dupont State Forest. Awesome hikes.
