It appears that we're not proud to be American anymore...?
The country appears to be divided in half on issues, and people are becoming more and more vocal. It seems that the Internet brought out all the regional issues of this country and people are trying to force it down to other regions...
Anyways, I get the general feeling that Americans hate other Americans and we're losing a sort of national identity and pride. In my travels around the world, I've come to realize that there are so many things we can be proud of. I see American influence EVERYWHERE.
Ok, so we lost our industrial strength and technological leadership and our Dollar is weakenning...but there's no denying that we had such an influence in everything.
I believe the US was the one who promoted the globalization of industry and markets. I see US culture everywhere. Despite the idea that people may hate us everywhere, everyone wants to follow our culture..our fashion..our trends.
English is now the unofficial standard language of global business. I sincerely believe that the US is responsible for this. With learning the language comes learning our culture. I'm Korean by blood, and I feel somewhat proud of my own people whenever I see my own maternal culture being displayed to others. We have to realize that we do in fact have a culture that is very different from others. Compared to other nations, we have different ideas on how we progress through life...that in itself is "culture." And we hose it everywhere to in our ads, etc...
We've always been a nation of hardworking immigrants, and historically liberal compared to other nations with thousands of years of history. We're one of the youngest nations in the world, yet is the most important/profound nation on this planet. We all had ancestors or even immediate family who are/were immigrants. we all are common in that sense.
Side note: (As a nation of immigrants, isn't it only natural to help our own mother nations and trade with them?)
Anyways...
Here's a list of things to be proud of:
internets
globalization of our ideals, ideas, etc..it's really nothing to be ashamed of. We should be
proud that we have people that have the initiative to spread US companies around the world.
hollywood (lol okok..a ton of our movies suck, and I know transformers isn't the best of movies, but man, it felt good seeing a ton of locals in other nations enjoy how we can apply our creativity)
arts and entertainment
the ability to accept everything and enjoy other cultures as they are (controversial claim on my part...but you get the idea)
NFL, NBA, MLB, etc...Sports that had its origins here is now fast becoming a global phenomenon. People of other nations strive HARD to beat us at any and every sport. We should be appreciative of them for benchmarking people from the US for their physical and talent goals. They celebrate like crazy if they beat any our teams. We should applaud their work ethic.
Olympics. Despite being the fattest nation, we have people who are physically among the top in the world (and not harvested from the gov't at an early age just for the sole purpose of the gold medal).
Automobile culture
blahblahblah etc etc...
Why do we take things we seriously and take it for granted; and criticize for its very existence? We should all take a step back, look at what's going on, and really appreciate what our own US society has provided.
oh..and travel more often if possible. I've never been so appreciative of what being a US citizen is like until I started to go to places around the globe.
