Things that make you hate repair work.

I love working on/repairing machines, but there are some things that make you think 'GODDAMMIT THIS SUCKS!" This also extends the time needed from 2x to 10000000x.

1. Rusted on bolts/pulleys

2. Broken/Stripped threads/bolts ( usually due to goddamn rust )

3. Things that need special one use tools - and they're probably expensive.
 
I hate when the engineer obviously stayed up late thinking about screwing with the mechanics brain. Things that look easy-until you try to do it and find a freakin' puzzle instead. I had an 85 AMC Eagle Sport, and just to remove the front wheel hub you needed SAE, Metric, Torx and, Allen head wrenches. All in an area less than a foot square. Most of the car was the same way. If there were 10 good ways to build something, and 1 really nasty way, they used the nasty one. I loved the car, but I loathed turning wrenches on it.

PB Blaster will fix that.
Or, at least, do a far better job than anything else on the market.

Yes, it helps, but there are always those bolts that don't budge regardless of the PB blaster. That leads to fun times.
 
Yeah, #3. I hate not having the right tool for the job, then struggling to make something work in its place when all the stores are closed.

This is the worst. The other two are workable but this is the one I hate the most.
 
Jerks that put things together using an air wrench and then you have to snap off the bolt/nut to take it apart.
 
Last Sunday I spent about 10 hours changing the fuel pump on a 20 year old Michigan car. Everything came apart pretty well, but the fuel lines had the fittings rusted to the lines and the U-bolts the gas tank strap bolts threaded into more or less discombobulated themselves with the bolt and the nut both spinning in unison and not coming unthreaded. In the tightest place imaginable. No way to get any tools in there at all.

Had to cut the straps to drop the tank.

With all the troubles, the job took quite a bit longer than it should have. It did remind me why I more or less quit working on cars over ten years ago. I get no joy whatsoever in working on them anymore. This was a job I wished I had never started.

So, I guess the thing that makes me hate repair work is old, rusty cars - and me.
 
Salt.

Salt fucks over every single bolt on the bottom of a car.

For example, when I was replacing my tranny, I had to remove my crossmember. The trans sitso n this, and is mounted to it. The goddamn bolt heads snapped off. I'm talking massive 21mm bitches.

Drilling those out, upside down, with a hand drill was a BLASSTTTTTTT.
 
There's almost no where to jack up a car anymore in your driveway. On my older cars and my 90's trucks, you could jack it on the frame under the drivers door. Now if you jack on the psuedo-frame, you'll crush it. If you find the jack point shown in the manual, it will be on the unibody and designed for changing a tire. You might find a spot for a lift, but it may be impossible to jack there safely with a standard jack.
 
Parts that are easily removed by taking out one or two bolts, but you can't get to the bolts unless you remove a bunch of other crap first.

Oh, and oil filters that are buried behind so much crap, that you have to be a contortionist just to get to it. Then you have try to take it out without spilling the oil all over the place.
