Things that give Americans a bad rep

I often hear people on this board complaing about the bad reputation that Americans have across the world, and wondering why/how they got it. Stop wondering.

In the dressing room, before the women's gold medal hockey game, the American team put a Canadian flag on the ground of their dressing room so that they could walk all over it, soil it, etc..

Now, the act in and of itself doesn't bother me, but because of the value that American's put of their own flag, and the meaning that such an act must have to them, I am quite bothered. This is the respect that Americans show their peacful neighbours to the north? To the team that sent cards of sympathy to the US team when one of its members had a family member die?

And what of the coverage that such an act would have had if the roles were reversed? It would be a media circus, and the Canadians would be hounded for months had they abused the American flag in such a manner.

In an Olympic tournament, where sportsmanship and respect are supposed to be valued above all else, things like this shouldn't even be thought of, let alone acted out. Under any circumstances, things like this shouldn't be thought of or acted out.

Americans, and the history of america tend to piss me off .. That's petty stuff.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.. I doubt i'm the only one who isn't exactly proud to be an american. Never have been, never will be. I live here, that's it.

And I can't wait to move.

I'll look around. At the end of the game, in an interview with Don Cherry, Wickenheiser talked about it, and said something to the effect of "...and now I want to know if they want us to sign it.".

(And that was one of my points, becing that nobody seems to know much about it - but if the roles were reversed...)

I just re-read my post, and realize how pompous I come off sounding. I don't mean to imply that anybody here would act in such a manner, just that these type of actions piss me off.

<< Several Canadian players claimed the Americans had, in the words of forward Vicky Sunohara, committed "countless acts of disrespect since the beginning of the Olympics." They said the Americans had put a Canadian flag on the floor of their dressing room and walked on it. They also said the Americans had signed autographs over their faces on photos in the coffee house at the Olympic Village >>

<< The Canadians smirk and say they've heard the United States has a Canadian flag on the floor of its dressing room to remind the Americans of whom they've been perennially chasing. >>

It's funny, but this is what is called "rumor." It's not been verified whatsoever.

Americans pride themselves on their individualism and are shocked to discover that they not only are easily identifiable, ie similar to other Americans, but that the traits they share in common aren't all very flattering. It's not easy for the worshiper of individualism to discover that he or she is the product of conditioning. It is difficult enough, in fact, that one of the characteristics of Americans, is that they are blind in this regard.

Anyone remember the ball game when the US military had the Canadian flag upside down? If that had happened to a US flag it would have been an act of war. ;) I remember Canadians just kinda shrugging over the whole incident " Ignorant Americans..what can yea do" :)

<< According to the U.S. coach and the players, this was just something the Canadian coach used to get the women worked up for the game. At least that's what the news is saying on TV now. >>

Thats, bad. I personaly would disqualify any team that would do that to any flag, even their own.

How about a coach who lied to his own team about the other team doing something to there flag to pump em up? Then people make threads like these and puting the other team in a bad light? Where the apology from the gracious other team for smearing there name?

Oh, I see, so the American Olympic Hockey Team is to blame for all the other countries jealousy of America. I see. Thanks for enlightening me. Stop wishing you were an American and get on with your life. You know we are the biggest superpower and that bothers non-Americans, it's no great phsycological breakthrough, moron.

What annoys me most is that you post that drivel on an American owned and operated site. Don't you realize that the reason America is so different from all other countries is because we let the scum from anybodies countries come and live in ours, which should stop. I'm tired of all you jerks who love to take advantage of all the US has to offer but then also take great joy in ripping on us. Jealous bastards, go home.

U.S. forward Katie King said: "There's not even a lick of truth to that. We hadn't seen a Canadian flag until we were out there on that ice, so I don't know where that came from. . . . I'm kind of upset. I would hope they would have a mutual respect for our team, but obviously in those statements, they don't. But there's nothing we can do about that."

Said U.S. forward Julie Chu: "For someone to even suggest that is difficult for me. It might be what it took for them to get motivated. I really trust in the character of our team, and I know we wouldn't do something like that. That just seems like a really disrespectful thing to do."

I guess the American players are liars too. Canada enjoy the gold medal you so much deserve.

You are all crazy, we Americans are perfect!!!

What the hell do Canadians and Mexicans contribute to North America (or the World, for that matter) anyhow? Both Nations sit on our borders secure in their knowledge that we will never be a threat to them and also knowing that we would never tolerate anyone else posing a threat to them. They steal our jobs and criticize everthing we do. I still cannot get over the "Canadian town meeting" which was broadcast after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. One Canadian after another marched up to a microphone and told us we are war mongers and we brought this on ourselves, then many proceeded to to claim that this did not involve Canada and asked their Govt. to keep them out of it. Hell, half the terrorists that are in the U.S. come across the Canadian border!!!!! We ought to annex Canada and use it as a landfill and a place to store our nuclear waste!!!!!:p!!!!!

I repeat......we are perfect and the rest of the world is extremely jealous

The observation I've been told most in my travels is that a lot of Americans have the irritating habit of deciding to travel to foreign lands to broaden their horizons... but to then expect the place and the people they meet to be just like
those home

Yeah, we Americans are just so awful. We should all be summarily executed.

Some people will believe anything that makes the United States look bad. And you know who you people are. :disgust:
