I often hear people on this board complaing about the bad reputation that Americans have across the world, and wondering why/how they got it. Stop wondering.
In the dressing room, before the women's gold medal hockey game, the American team put a Canadian flag on the ground of their dressing room so that they could walk all over it, soil it, etc..
Now, the act in and of itself doesn't bother me, but because of the value that American's put of their own flag, and the meaning that such an act must have to them, I am quite bothered. This is the respect that Americans show their peacful neighbours to the north? To the team that sent cards of sympathy to the US team when one of its members had a family member die?
And what of the coverage that such an act would have had if the roles were reversed? It would be a media circus, and the Canadians would be hounded for months had they abused the American flag in such a manner.
In an Olympic tournament, where sportsmanship and respect are supposed to be valued above all else, things like this shouldn't even be thought of, let alone acted out. Under any circumstances, things like this shouldn't be thought of or acted out.
