Things Running Hot, I think, & Mem PROBLEMS

Been having and conquering many challenges setting up new/old system., OMG exhausting.....but right now, i need help with:

1) While this chip is amazing (did video conversion experiment, over 350 fps and CPU never gets above 30%).....I think it's running hot. I will upload speed fan interface below.

2) More worse---after going thru much misery, I got new 64-bit media from Dell and OMG, I luv 64! BUT, OMG, I UPGRADED THE RAM TO 8 GBs (board maxes at 16).....and, it reads right in bios and system, etc, YES, 8, BUT ONLY 3.49 available!!!!

I spent much time delving.....I think I need to figure out if this board supports memory mapping....cause I configured everything else right in bios, flashed the bios which is now current, updated the drivers....I am so sad. And tired.😳

3) GPU running HOT.😵

I have replaced mobos and reseated chips....I even have some Arctic Silver left, but unlike my other two Optis....this one has more proprietary stuff, including the EPA PSU with NOT NORMAL, usual ATX plug (this very scary to me)....otherwise I would do the usual and replace the thermal paste with my good stuff.

But this system is little over two years old only.....and in REALLY GOOD SHAPE.

Please, can anyone assess and offer info? I did all the delving I could on my own on all these issues and previous ones I have solved.

Many thanks

Sorry, I am tired. and should have right off....
Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit/ i7 870 2.93/Two SATA II HDDS (I installed backup one), both healthy drives)/ ATI Radeon HD 4550/ 8GBs of DDR3.

Hold on..I should upload an Everest report to save time....

Thanks much for helping!!!!

PS: This is an Optiplex 980 MT (mini tower, the biggest configuration, I only get those)

1.Your cpu idle temps look fine.
2 Have you tried all ram slots?
3.You didn't mention gpu temps 🙂

OMG, I just got tears seeing what u posted re the CPU temps! (Haven't slept in 3 days much) MAYBE ....I do not have to replace the paste!!!!

Pls look at the speedfan jpg.......see the red??????? I can just not stand the red. O wait......U mean I din list that in original post. but that is why i uploaded the speefan thingy. Sigh.

Must switch systems to upload the Everest report which I should have done right off.
THANK U SO MUCH FOR HELPING!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: I seated the two new sticks in the open slots....there are 4. Original sticks were seated in the white lever slots. the two new ones are in the black lever slots. U think i should change the order of the sticks?

OMG......more tears now, cause if YOU say this, I know it is true.

But how about this stunning ram issue? Only 3.49 GGs available!!! Out of eight!

Heartfelt thanks.

Edit: must do this later, have work to do now! Thanks again everyone!

Are you running 64-bit or 32-bit windows?

As I posted, 64-bit. Or else I would not have upgraded to 8GBs....which is why the ram issue is an issue. I spent much time on the interwebs, saw many similar things posted, and the usual suggestion is to find out if the board supports memory mapping.

No such thing appears in the bios....and I looked at every single option.
PS....ran all systems tests....and everything comes up lovely. On paper, at least.

PPS....should I switch out the sticks? Pls look at them in Everest. But why would I when they are each 2 GBs???? My new ones are the Crucial ones I got on ebay....new.

PPPS....and why on earth should I be having this limited usuable ram issue when the board supports up to 16GBs and I am running 64 bit????????????
Hold on......I need to find something From MS I found...and put a link here on this issue!

Got it!

The red is for a high temp, I don't think that program cares it is pointing to the video card. That is not a high temp for a video card.

As for 64-bit, I'll have to do some digging.

P.S. Considering cutting down your post. The amount of extraneous information makes it very difficult to find what you are actually trying to say/ask. The more you do that, the less people are going to help you.

OMG!!!!! THANK U! I had no clue......I got down on the floor and watched the GPU fan to find out if it was sick.

Ketchup....pls use the link I pasted. Out of all the stuff i read on this issue.....that is the most dense with data one.

Why instead of sleeping......i have been committed to setting up this system perfectly as fast as i can....is My Bad. But that's what I do. then, I cry.

PS....at first, system booted sooo slowly.....was way slower than the system I am on, PD 3.40! then, I delved and learned and saw using msconfig.....boot was set to use only one core. I switched it to 7....and FIXED!

And, for anyone interested, Windows Easy Transfer works! Using home network.

MS is covering a small variance in what they show. You are only seeing 4 out of 8 GB, right? Does your computer run on just the new sticks you bought?

+1...@ ketchup79. I'm assuming that you mean you've installed Windows 7 Enterprise x64, as it wasn't an available option on the 980. To help figure out what's going on with your RAM I think you should verify something first: It's odd that Windows 7 x64 is reporting 3.49 GB of available memory, because that's very typical of the amount of memory that a Windows 7 x86 system would report, while Windows 7 x64 would report the full amount (up to Dell's 16GB limit).

One way you can verify Windows bitness is by clicking Start and then typing msinfo32 in the search box. Click the msinfo32.exe icon to open System Information console. When the System Information console opens, look at the right pane under the Item column and find System Type.

It will read either x64-based PC or x86-based PC. If it reports x64 then the problem is most likely with the memory modules themselves, in which case it would be helpful if you could post the specs for both the old modules and the new modules you just installed.

Trying to post while working......the system ran on the two original sticks installed. But I think U want me to remove all buy my new sticks, yes?????

Edit: No, I think you want me to remove the original sticks and boot it with my two new ones?

Right after using the new media Dell sent....and I did clean instal, I looked at everything. EVERYTHING SAYS 64-BIT!!!! ___________________________________________ Another correction (I am too tired to even think): they did send me W 7 Pro. The OS in the system as posted and as I got it was W 7 ENTERPRISE. I could get into it, it even had Office 2010, but it was messed up. It had locked partition, I discovered, and I could not download anything....permissions denied and I could not change that! A NITEMARE. You buy a used system, you take chances. But now I am good to go.... I will always have my little Restore DISK from Dell.

Does that computer have onboard Intel video? If it does, look in the BIOS and make sure it isn't using a bunch of your RAM.

I know you have the AMD card, but you would still need to disable the Intel video, if it has it, or turn down the memory it is allotted.

Very good question, but hard to believe when the system shipped on April 24 of 2011 (it was made March 11 of 2011), given this graphics card was factory installed, the onboard wasn't turned off. But.....trust me, I will check!!!!!

But since no quad core chip can communicate with integrated video, I dunno, cause I think only quads were options in this system, i.e. i5s & i7...and this Lynnfield was the best. _______________________________________ CORRECTION: Just read more in the service manual, and Dell (I luv their Optis) offer seven chips with this Opti, right down to the 13 dual cores. My Lynnefield was the best one....main reason I bid on this particular Opti.

OK, I didn't know if the card came with it, or you added it, or Dell offered it with both as a 'feature.'

I kinda got that, which is why I made sure to explain. i know via the service tag....and also real time chatting with Dell guy (who sent me the Media after I went thru the misery of taking official ownership, he knew every single thing about the system, of course, as it shipped).....exactly what was loaded in the system at birth.

And again, all the newer chips....including the pre ivy/Sandy i7 I chose (I always choose the chip first)....require discreet video anyhow. If they did not, I would remove the thing altogether! I mean it. Never had a new system, never needed one.....and this is the first system I've had needing discreet video!

And Dell offered several cards.....I wish I had a 128 cause I don't need more, but this is the one the original buyer chose, a 512. System was used at a business, lots of Optis are.

Edit: I also ran the interactive Crucial thingy Crucial has.....and they registered all 4 sticks right there on their page. And, Crucial properly offered options to upgrade to 16 GBs.....also suggested one of their sDDs for $200.

Click start and type msconfig in the search box and hit enter. Under the boot tab click advanced options. Select maximum memory and tell us what number it puts in the box below it. You can select 8 processors as well for your i7, that helps it boot quicker.

Hey, Matt. Did I not post I did that and fixed that problem????? And it upset me that the mqax mem in the box was only 4106. But it was set at one core....I alreayd shared all this.

Now, I have some new screenies and a pic I took of the bios to upload....hopefully someone here will be able to make sense of the info and advise. Hold on.....lot of info I do not understand in what I will soon upload.

The pic I took of screen when in bios....confirms the graphics configuration on the board is fine. IS THAT RIGHT? I AM TOO EXHAUSTED TO TELL!!! All the mem stuff.....I do not understand, but I am positive someone here will!!!!!!!

OK wait....I made myself reread the MS article in response to a guy who posted this same problem....when I fixed the slow boot issue, I checked the max mem box! I just read, I should not have done that! And that was very early after I first did clean install. So I went back and unchecked it, rebooted....and maybe things are OK now.

But I also now see (pls C below screenie) it is the AVAILABLE GRAPHICS MEM now listed as just over 4! I am pasting and then uploading new image.

Hi AshK86,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

There could be two possibilities with this issue.
1. May be the maximum memory is not enabled in the BIOS.
2. Maximum memory is not configured in advanced boot options.

BIOS.
You can check with your BIOS manufacturer, about how to enable the maximum memory.

Check the advanced boot options.
1. Go to Start, in the search bar type msconfig and press enter.
2. System Configuration window will open on the screen.
3. Click on tab named "boot".
4. Click on "Advanced Options" and uncheck the box for "Maximum Memory".

Hope it helps.

Thanks and Regards:

I had a feeling that was it. Do you see a place to adjust the memory amount for the onboard video from the BIOS?

Hey. Jus caught this, nice YOU had a feeling, LOL, cause I sure didn't until I read what I pasted. Sigh. How innocently checking a little box could wreak such havoc, amazes me. I will look in the bios and see if this option I never heard of is present! Edit: I looked, and alas, I do not see anything like that. Maybe I looked in the wrong places? So many options for things, esp the chip, but now I feel bad I might not have this option. But in every way, as usual, this is amazing Opti....and for $352 plus 23 shipping? But you pay in other ways struggling to put things right. Assuming I do not have this option, is there anything else I can do, Ketchup??? Why is so much ram assigned to graphics????? Another Edit: Are you getting from the pic above of my bios and graphics stuff, the right setting it is on (AUTO) disables integrated graphics????
