[*]Lower the price of hardware to normal Windows box prices ($1000)
[*]Provide lots of tools to help people switch
[*]Get rid of the Apple == Gay designer image
[*]Show how it is easier to use a Mac than a PC
[*]Promote games and software for Mac
[*]Then show off the pretty stuff

Any other ideas?

Nope.

[*]Provide lots of tools to help people switch

What more do you need?

[*]Get rid of the Apple == Gay designer image

The people that believe this crap is the problem, not apple.

[*]Show how it is easier to use a Mac than a PC

Use one an find out. ;)

[*]Promote games and software for Mac

Look at their site, there's software right there.

[*]Then show off the pretty stuff

Umm, ok.

Any other ideas?

Not give a damn about x86 based PC users and keep their fans happy.

The day Apple puts out a sub $500 computer is the day they will start to see an increase in market share. Their OS is easy enough to use, it has nice graphics, and most people prefer the Apple look to PC's.

No one releases a platform at that price.

I don't think that you'll ever see an affordable Apple product. They know that they are a nitch player now, so they'll probably continue to cater to the trendy yuppie types who have disposable income to blow on pretty looking computers and consumer electronics.

If you want an affordable computer, get a Dell. If you want something stylish that will go with your Ikea computer desk and Prada laptop bag, buy an Apple.

Show me a comparable platform that is cheaper. :)

more programs need to me made compatable with apple. I know several people who decided not to switch for that reason. But they are getting better at it,

I could see a bigger jump in a couple of years.

Jesus, shut up already. Pigeon-holing everyone who uses a certain type of computer is stupid and inane. There are all sorts of types of people who use Macs just as there are who use PCs. Generalities are bad. Don't make them.

And Apple doesn't need to cater to Joe six-pack who wants to go to Wal-Mart and pick up a computer in a box so he can surf on that there intarweb. They cater to a different crowd. Apple's are almost all-inclusive and come with just about everything you could want, whereas cheap PCs come with very barebones setups and you would have to upgrade to get real quality, or pay for it, like you do with Apple.

The reason PCs can be so cheap is that everyone and their grandmother makes components, so there's a huge price war and Dell/HP/Gateway/etc. can put in crap components that don't cost a lot and thereby sell cheap computers. Apple doesn't do that, and people are willing to pay for the higher quality components and engineering that goes into them.

Types of things the Mac users (including myself) are into:
Network/system security, unix, system administration, music

Not exactly the beatnik gay guy sitting in starbucks with a bunch of other elitist pricks type that most people think of. ;)

Maybe you don't. But some people think they know more than Apple about what would be good for Apple.

You can already get a complete system for $799

[*]Provide lots of tools to help people switch

Like what?

Office? Check.
Web Browser? Check
Email Client? Check
CD/MP3 player? Check
Photo viewer/editor? Check
IM programs? Check

Besides games, what else do most people you know use their computers for?

[*]Get rid of the Apple == Gay designer image

People who think this are usually 19 year old computer nerds who have never really spent any time with a Mac or OS X. They think computers are for porn and games.

[*]Show how it is easier to use a Mac than a PC

It takes about five minutes in front of a Mac and OS X to figure out how it works and how simple it is to use.

[*]Promote games and software for Mac

There is already a TON of software for the Mac. Just because YOU haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not out there. Apps for the PC that don't have a comparable OS X counterpart are few and far between.

And, while Macs are a completely viable gaming platform, why would a developer completely rewrite their game to sell to a market that doesn't generally play a lot of games as it is?

Any other ideas?

Sure, I have one. Try REALLY using a Mac and OS X for everything except playing games for one month and then let me know how you feel about them. Anand himself did it and he was as impressed as most people who give them a chance. If he, the king of PC hardware, can admit that OS X and Apple are a good platform, I can't understand why other people who post on these forums can't.

Joe Sixpack good give a flying fart about comparible platform. They want big numbers plastered at them for low price. Apple has neither. When you can buy a Dell/Compaq/Emachine with a 2 or 3 ghz CPU, 120+ gig HD space, a cdrw, a 17" monitor, and a printer for under $400, Apple has absolutely no way to get their foot in the door.

But, to play devils advocate, the margins on those $400 systems are razor thin. Apple probably makes enough off of one system and peripherals for it that they can afford to be a low volume company.

Well....that's what I would be interested in buying now isn't it? If mac were to make something comparable in price then maybe I could afford to get one. So maybe I just don't get what you mean by "platform".

Platform, like Sun's machines with Solaris. Or the Alpha machines with Tru64 out there. IBM's POWER series with AIX. You know, platform.

And Apple computers aren't marketed to Joe Sixpack. ;)

Can you imagine all of the computer morons calling Apple support wondering why some Wintel software wasn't working on their brand new beerMac?

So if MS only released its OS with its own hardware it'd be a platform? Who the f cares? The average joe blow could care less if he's buying a "platform" or a clone. To 99% of people a computer is a computer, period.

EDIT: From what I can see at work people have more problems with the software written for Mac then software written for PC. I fail to see why having a platform is at all advantageous. I just see more $$$ for the developer of that platform.

Right. So why would they care about any of the things that amdfanboy has said that they need to do to "switch"?

Agreed, and that's one of the reasons apple probably doesn't market to them.

Haven't noticed. I've never worked in a Mac shop.
