I remember briefly reading about this technology on DailyTech back when CES was going on. Now, I can't find anthing about it. A search on DailyTech yields absolutely nothing. So, what's this all about? Does it work just like a crt?

Search here and Google for SED. In a nutshell, it's closer to CRT than LCD but it has fixed resolution. Very high contrast, very low response times, very good viewing angles... but the tech isn't mature enough to be released. Current info - first SED TVs should be released in 2007.

SED is this:

I think this is what you mean by saying "thin CRT".

OTOH, this is ThinCRT:

Correct me if I'm wrong but ThinCRT (also called FED) was the initial name of the technology aimed at combining LCD-like depth of displays with the advantages of CRT. Then the tech was sold, and now the development is called SED.

One more article confirming the techs are related, though not exactly the same:

Sony appears to be working on a slightly modified version of FED (ThinCRT).
