Thin Women Make More Money, Thin Men Make Less

– If you want to snag a higher paycheck, get skinny—unless you're a guy, in which case you’d do better to pack on the pounds, according to a new study. The new research shows that employers tend to pay very thin women more than their average-weight counterparts, while very thin men tend to get paid less, the Wall Street Journal reports. Paychecks for men continue to rise even as they pass average weight to overweight, a trend which does not start to reverse until they hit obesity.

Women who weighed 25 pounds less than the norm earned an average of $15,572 more per year, and those who weighed more were penalized as their weight increased—a woman 25 pounds above the norm earned an average $13,847 less. Men, on the other hand, earned $8,437 less if they were thin, and one study showed that the highest average pay point was 207 pounds. Sure, this could all be due to prejudice, but the study also suggests people with the “ideal” body type may wield more influence and therefore get more things done.

Do you see this as true? As said, it may be all due to prejudice, but I think it exists.

I'm sorry...since when did overweight (for a man) become the ideal body type? When I see a man that is overweight or obese (or anyone for that matter) I think that they have impulse control problems and that they are somewhat lazy, physically, and don't know how to make informed choices. I also think they are in a bit of denial. I would know because I've been there.

Now, as an average weight and muscular person I have even more prejudice against overweight/obese because I know what it took to take those pounds off, and it wasn't a miracle. Education about foods and exercise is all it took. Oh, and admitting that I was fat.

Anyhow, I think it is bullshit. I think the real reason is this: 2/3 of Americans are overweight. This means that 2/3 of the men doing the hiring are overweight. Who wants to promote someone who is healthier and better looking than them? I think it has more to do with ego than anything...for men at least.

It's all related to self confidence. Thin/attractive women make more because they are more confident and it shows in how they carry themselves. Thin men are often passive in the mannerism and as such influences how others perceive them.

Not surprising at all.

I wouldn't know really... I only know how much I make but I would agree with the women part, I can imagine that with context... not so much for men.

I think its more likely that height is factor for men rather than weight, and obviously taller men weigh more. It's pretty questionable analysis to just look at someone who "weighs 25 pounds less than average" and declare them skinny, they might just be short.

Spidey is on a roll....

There has been a few posts that I actually agree with...

While I do not agree 100% with his above post, I think there is some truth it.

Maybe the rapture is happening....

i think it's based on stereotypical views of what is considered attractive, while very thin women are the stereotype, very thin men are not.

Just one more reason why TridenT is fucked.

That's the least of his worries. lol. Hmm, I haven't seen him around lately. :hmm:

I was reading an article about how to dress as a thin man. They suggest using horizontal lines, layers and textured fabrics to build the illusion of bulk. It's a fine line because you don't want to look like your swimming in your suit. Double breasted jackets are recommended. I'm tall and thin so dressing in upscale attire is difficult at best. :\

Overweight men (usually tall but not obese) are quite the norm almost everywhere and they are the ones making the decisions. They don't desire fatties, they desire the thin view in the opposite sex and those who are more like them in their own sex.

You don't think it's possible that richer men can afford to eat more?
And richer women can afford to starve themselves more?

pshhh no way my man. As long as you have confidence and aren't a total scarecrow, tall and thin looks pretty snappy. I consider myself tall and wiry, but I can fill out a suit nicely. I agree thats it's literally all about confidence.

Now as to WHY it's all about confidence... I have my thoughts but I think it might be best to it's own thread instead of derailing this one.

Thin people are more motivated and ambitious. They care more about their appearance and how they're perceived. A thin professional women will tend to put effort into staying thin regardless of how successful she becomes whereas a thin man is more likely to gain weight once they have reached a level of success......hence the results of this report.

The study doesn't tell us what jobs they had. I'm assuming they just did weight/salary/gender stats and didn't account for job/positions.

I think in general, better looking people (while a thin person isn't always better looking, it helps) are helped more in life so they get more chances and as a result might get into better schools/jobs. The cute girl is generally going to get more help than the not cute girl..

As for males, I think taller/bigger males usually in business/finance, so they make more. Probably more used to getting what they want due to size and it shows as confidence. As they work more hours, earn more and eat more they get fatter. They might not be fat, but they have a belly and are not 'thin'.
