fact, ati's stock cooler, does use heat pipes, if you were to take it apart, you can see them clear as day. my 1900 died recently(unknown reasons) and i dissasembled the cooler, it has heatpipes right by the gpu core area where it makes contact and goes the length of the copper gpu cooler.

This is a repost check here... but while it's here, do you think there will be a comparison for an nvidia card like the 7900gt?

You're right, I have no idea why the idea that it doesn't have a heatpipe keeps getting repeated. Apparently, Tom's didn't even bother to take the cooler apart before spreading incorrect info. This certainly makes me want to take the rest of their findings with a grain of salt...

ATI's stock cooler is very reminiscent of Arctic Cooling's NV5. It features a copper core that contacts the GPU, surrounded by an aluminum casing that contacts the memory (through thermal pads). There are no heat pipes in this cooler; it uses simple copper fins to dissipate heat.

Wow, he didn't get a bit performance delta between most of them... Other reviews have shown a bigger improvement going to aftermarket cooling. I just installed an Acccelero X2 on my friend's X1900XT and he got at 10C drop on idle and about a 20C drop on load (stock fan @ auto, Accelero @ 100%).

I'm getting an X1900XTX hopefully tomorrow, and will post my results going from stock to an X2 after that...
