They're shutting off power in our dorm!!

The power in our hallway hasn't gone out at all, but in other halls they've had problems with power (it'll go out at like 8:00 and stay out 'till like 11:00). So, on Sunday morning they're shutting off all power to the dorm and they'll be replacing some stuff (breakers, switches, etc. I guess). The outage will be from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

This sucks because I ordered some Logitech Z560s and they were delivered to my house yesterday - so I wanted to have my parents bring them by and hook them up today, but I don't want to leave the speakers in the room since there will be no power tomorrow and there's really no point!

Geez - all it takes is a little common sense - if your TV is on, don't use the microwave, comptuer, speakers and printer all at the same time people! Gosh, for being so smart, some people in this dorm have little common sense.

Well gosh, since you're so smart, why didn't you consider that the problem was something different from overdraw? It doesn't take hours to flip a breaker. Maybe...some of their equipment is starting to fail?

I don't know about your dorms, but for mine, each room is breakered. The individual ROOM will loose power, rather then the entire dorm in the event of an overdraw. If your dorm isn't set up this way, I would seriously worry about your safety.

thats how our dorm was too-- and they could take an extreme amount of draw-- 2 fridges, 2 computers, tv with massive HT system, microwave, window AC unit, and lights and everything else going on in the room.. never had a problem with overdraw. Dorm rooms are built for that kind of stuff.

my guess would be that the equipment is getting old and just needs to be replaced.

Well Gosh, Anthrax 101, here's an excerpt from the flier put in all the mailboxes (along with a heavy duty flashlight, I might add):

There is an enormous amount of power that is being used by many of the residents and to help lessen the amount of outages, tripped breakers, etc. we are asking that you...unplug two itens from your room that you do not need.

And, every time the power has gone out, it's been an entire hall - never an individual room. Well gosh, I guess I am so smart.

All right, all right. Let's stop this bickering. Sorry I didn't mention the flier - I just thought that my own words would be enough. But seriously, I know that a dorm room requires a lot of power but if people were somewhat economical about it then the problem wouldn't be this big. But basically, the point of the post was that it sucks to have NO power for 8 hours on a sunday afternoon. Oh well, at least I get to watch the ND vs. UM game this afternoon...GO BLUE! :D

Why would you have soemthing plugged in that you don't need to? If you don't need it, it probably shouldn't even be in the shoebox of a room the dorms probably have. :p

when i lived in the dorms, they were pretty sweet-- we had enough space in our small room for two beds, 2 couches, a desk, and really nice HT system.

(probably the only nice thing about going to a small private college is the nice rooms.. everything else thier sucks)

Yeah, my room is 11' x 12' and it's a shoebox. But, everything fits, and the furniture is fairly nice, and it will be nice and cozy in the winter.

Oh who am I kidding! It's tiny and people across campus have the 12 x 19 rooms and they're paying the same amt. of $$.

If you're so smart, how come you're a UM fan? :p (Granted, in this case it's better than being a ND fan, but still...) Just some good-natured ribbing from a fellow Big Ten fan. More like Big Two, little eight this year though. OSU and UM are clearly at the top. I think that the Big Ten Championship will be decided on 23 Nov.

ZV <-- Waiting for 23 Nov. in Columbus when Tressel makes it two in a row.

hmm how's the weather out in Michigan these days? Maybe this will actually force you to go outside for a bit instead of browsing ATOT all day :)

Our dorms are pretty sweet, we share a kitchen with 2 others and it comes with a full size fridge. 615 sq feet for 4 people is pretty good.

I think i would suffer through one day without power so it would be more reliable (read, not shut off) at other times repeatedly.

a week or 2 ago, they cut the power to most of the dorms on campus here (LSU). "luckily" ours only lost a/c. but being in LA in the summer without a/c for 8 hours during the day is like being trapped in hell... thankfully, my house is 5 mins from campus, so i got to go home and enjoy a/c (along with some peace and quiet) instead of having to suffer through that hell:D

Let's see - right now I'm at home (just got out of the shower) and we're going down soon to the Verizon Wireless store to get our plan changed (to a family plan with unlimited nights and weekends).

Anyone have any other suggestions? I don't get away from the dorm/computer much!
