Just have someone say "don't be an asshole, don't drink and drive" or something.

Lots of people are assholes so if they start the ad out that way people will go "Oh, this ad isn't meant for me, it's meant for people who aren't assholes."

They're not great ads but at least they're highlighting a realistic consequence. Those marijuana ads awhile back were terrible. The ones that said if you smoke marijuana you'll get pregnant and/or raped and/or a terrorist.

Stupid ad campaign.

You promise the drunks that you're going to catch them, even though you know you aren't (statistically).

So the drunk drives dozens of times without getting caught; what reason does s/he now have to believe that s/he will be caught?

Enforcement as currently practiced is a lousy way to stamp out this sort of behaviour.

I'm not too much in favor of increasing the penalties for first time offenders. But, your 2nd DUI or DWI should = automatic lifetime revocation of license, impoundment and loss of your vehicle, etc. Sort of the way a felon is not allowed to own a firearm, after 2 offenses, you may not own a car, motorcycle, etc. Hell, after two offenses, you don't even get to own a riding lawnmower. :p

I don't know how this is possible but my coworker's friend has 7 DUIs and is currently a free man.
