The new midrange at $300 is only because people are impatient and have to have the latest gadget NOW NOW NOW. It's basic capitalism. Supply and demand. If you only have X product, but X + Y people want it, why not charge more? You'll make more bucks, and it will help your supply issue somewhat because less people will probably buy it at the higher price point.

The thing is, you don't HAVE to buy the latest gear when it first comes out. If you let the craze die down, things will be fine. If you want it NOW, you pay then.

This just doesn't apply to graphics cards. The same can be said for many things, IE Wiis, 360s, PS3s, etc...
