ok, so heres what happened:

I got a cell phone a about a month or so ago. They said I got service in my area. I quickly found out that I got no service even OUTSIDE my apartment complex (entire area was a dead zone). I returned the phone the next day.

I just got a bill for over $200.00 including a $150.00 cancellation charge. WTF?

Did you agree to their service contract? I'm assuming you did and the early cancellation charge was mentioned explicitly. However, I recommend you call them and explain yoru situation.

I recommend calling whoever sent you the bill(sprint I assume), and tell them your situtation and see what they say.

Yeah, I agreed to a service contract. The point is though, they breached the contract when thye did NOT PROVIDE SERVICE as stated.

Is that right? Cell phone providers are pretty notorious for not guaranteeing coverage, and contracts / T's and C's will usually reflect that with disclaimers. Even the coverage maps disclaim that they are only approximations and are not a guarantee of service availability.

They're pretty good about a 14 or 30 day no-penalty return period, though. Are you over that limit?

nope, I just got off the phone with them. Of course, I should not have been billed the charge, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I end up owing $11.34 for 5 days service, which I don't mind paying.

I did not talk to Sprint when I originally purchased the service, I went through Radio SHack...which stated that I would get service.

There should be a 2-4 week return period with no fees.
Even if there is most states have Buyer's Remorse laws that allow you to return purchases in 2 or 3 days for no fee.

Sprint will insist that they will not sell you a phone if they do not have coverage in your area. They will get your street address and zip code and then swear up and down that you do.

I am sorta in the same boat except I get enough coverage that my phone is barely usable at my house. Away from it, the service is quite good except for parts of Western Birmingham.

Edit- If you returned the phone the next day I believe that you should NOT be charged the early cancellation fee or account activation fee. Keep calling and talk to as many people as it takes to get your situation handled.

I did a CSA about four months ago and it took Sprint about six different CSRs to finally get it right. I finally stumbled on a man that actually knew how to do his job and I had things fixed quickly.

Well, if I walked out into the middle of the 10 acre field next to my apartment complex, I MIGHT get 2 bars if I was lucky (yes, I tried it).

They absolutely do have a trial period during which you can cancel without penalty, and 2 days definitely falls within that period.

They should fix the bill. Keep calling. You should be billed no more than a few bucks for any airtime you may have used in those 2 days.

Good luck getting through though. SPCS customer service sucks for hold times (and they seem to think that is OK). I hope you have a speakerphone to listen to the nice on-hold Musak.
