the album version with just the counting crows is a LOT better. the record company just added all of the vanessa carlton in later, probably just to make it cooler. which, it did not.

Jeez, you're dense. Read the lyrics again. That song isn't "left wing tree-hugger crap." It's a lament for the loss of the old small towns which were replaced by sprawling suburbia.
Look at the 1st 4 lines for God's sake (straight from your link, so I didn't change the all caps):
