They need to start decoding movies to divx with 5.1 sound

Is it that much harder to decode the 5.1 sound to divx? I recently downloaded a free movie that was decoded in 5.1 sound and it's so much better on my 5300's

It's definitely possible, but it takes up way more space for a DD 5.1 track than a 2-channel MP3 one, which is why most don't do it I think.

Quoted for posterity.

edit: I think your question was answered - it's to save space.

So many clever people in here. But yeah, I recently watched Kingdom of Heaven that was 700mb, perfect video quality with perfect 5.1 surround. I dont think 5.1 surround takes much more to encode.

It doesn't take much more, heck, if you used ogg it'd probably be in the same ballpark.

Indeed. Good quality 5.1 audio need not be AC3. 🙂
