They need to design doors so they slide DOWN from above and don't take up valuable wall space!

Really, think about it. Pick a room in your home; say, the bedroom. Step back and look at the doorway; see how when the door is open you "lose" all that wall space behind it?

What's up with that, man? :disgust: I could fit my dresser (chest of drawers) behind there! But I can't b/c then I couldn't open the damn door.

Imagine that the doors slid down from above...kind of like a French door, but vertical vis-a-vis horizontal.

Wouldn't that be cool?

Not possible. :camera:s? In order to allow the door a full range of motion, there cannot be anything behind it. unless you have some cool kind of door or something? 😕

Well, they make doors that slide into the door jam. Name escapes me though. They are expenive...and a bitch to install...but they do the same thing...and don't look like garage doors 🙂

French Doors. They are usually "double doors" that meet in the middle. Left slides left into the wall, right does the same. Very cool looking. 🙂

No digicam. When my door's open, there's only about three inches of space between the back of the door and the wall. My door only opens to a 90 degree angle.

actually my grandparents' house has doors like that, but it's not really useful, everytime you want to open/close the door, it's a pain in the as$ to reach the thing and pull it and etc... i dont like it. when i move into my new apartment in august, i am going to remove all doors 😀

No no no no no. Not french doors. These are "normal" width doors that slide on tracts into the door jam.

Half-French Doors, AKA Canadian Doors?

Bahahhaha! Damn, that was GOOD@! I crack me up. 😀

Aren't french door's hinged, and just open up from the middle? Like you see on houses walking out to a deck or a patio? The door itself doesn't actually slide into the wall does it?

Like a pocket door that is sometimes used on a small bathroom or closet?

They're called Pocket Doors. But, many times there is one door on each side and they meet in the middle to span a large gap.

P.S. - while the upward sliding doors is a good idea, it'd be a bitch to implement. Lots of things to think about - structural issues above, sealing that door/opening from the attic if there one above, cost.... Plus, how would repair it if it broke and had all its internals like springs, cables, etc inside another wall on the floor above?

Good idea, but probably not gonna happen anytime soon.

Um, then you'd have to have an 8ft high attic to make room for the doors when they were up. You could jsut as easily add a second story to the building and not worry about space.

Yeh, like that, but I've seen them used in full sized doorways where a normal hinged door wouldn't be able to open due to a tight corner or a counter top in the way.

Yep.
Pocket doors = Slide into wall
French doors = Double door with swinging in arcs (like 2 normal doors side by side)

Ah, thank you; I was confused about the diff. I stand corrected. 🙂

I still say it stinks the way I lose about 9 square feet b/c of my bedroom door.

Simple, Beads, or get a nice rug type thing and hang it up, like a curtain or something in front of the door. Problem solved. Still have privacy and dont have swinging doors.

I got a bunch of pocket doors throughout my house. We had them put in when the house was built so they wern't hard to install. 😉 They are great!
