Seriously, I forgot it even existed until this moment. Can't remember a single thing about the movie, although I know I saw it in the theater when it came out.
By Grabthar's Hammer you have a short memory!

This movie actually gave rise to a cult following. There's tons of fan fiction in the universe, pleads for a sequel, convention followings, and they even based the ship in The Orville after the ship in the movie.

Seriously- look how fleshed out they made the movie: https://galaxyquest.fandom.com/wiki/Galaxy_Quest_Wiki

Alright, maybe I'll give it another watch. I was all of 15 when it came out so it probably deserves another shot.

yeah, it's surprisingly good. I only watched somewhat recently (last 5 years, I think), and was quite amused by it. It has a lot of great moments and of course, Alan Rickman makes everything better.

....except for Bottle Shock, that movie was just...meh.

One of the best movies ever made!

Wouldn't quite go that far.....M*A*S*H, for one movie, was and still is vastly superior in almost every sense that counts. But Galaxy Quest was decent enough to watch more than once...maybe twice.

Same here. Pleasantly surprised by the movie. Much better than I was expecting.

Watch your tongue Sarris or you'll get an Omega 13 up your ass. Galaxy Quest is what The Orville should have been.

it had a few funny moments, but was far from good. Those of you who think it's "GREAT!"...how old were you when you first saw it? Odds are, you were either kids...or teenagers.

I would have been in my mid-20s (not that I said it was great, but better than Boomer says it was).

I think that's the case for nearly all movies, though - like, I went back & watched the original Star Wars with my nephews, and the pacing was so slow that they all got bored & quit halfway through. I still love the movies, but they're definitely not perfect, no matter how well-integrated they are into pop culture.

I am a LOT more picky about movies these days. I still love good dumb movies - I watch Bill & Ted every year - but they need to have that creative spark in them to make them fun. Troll Hunter is a great modern example - the pacing is slow, but I really enjoyed the story a lot!

Back to the Future still holds up too. Watching it as an adult, however, makes it harder to see past the acting & script and get into that mental story mode where your imagination connects with the director's vision to get you sucked into the movie & you become enveloped in the world that they've created (well, the good movies make an effort to make that happen, anyway).

Nowadays, Star Wars is pretty bad. Terrible set construction, costumes, even acting. At the time...it was great.

You don't have to have been a kid, you just have to compare it to its competition. It came out between Insurrection and Nemesis, and is arguably the best "Star Trek" movie released post-First-Contact, in the same way that The Orville is a better Star Trek series than Voyager, Enterprise, or Discovery.

And compared to the Star Wars prequels, well damn.

I finally saw it a few years ago when I was ~36. It was better than expected.
