They have totally ruined PC Gamer

I considered PC Gamer the best magazine for many years. Its design, its writing, and the sheer fun of reading it. It was so easy to pick up and just read. The design was easy on the eyes and you just knew where everything was. It was natual and beautiful.

They have been redesigning this magazine for years now. The pre-2001 PC Gamer was the ultimate in my opinion. They changed it again I believe in 2003.

Well their most recent redesign, a few months ago, has totally ruined everything I like about the magazine. They now have sections based on each genre and put reviews in there accordingly. For example, in the roleplaying section, they have everything roleplaying, like previews and reviews. Its difficult to really see if you're reading a news story, a review or a preview.

I understand you could always look up and see what you're reading, but the real point is that they have completely gone the opposite way in terms of magazine design. They have taken something that was so good and totally ruined it. Now, the joy of receiving PC Gamer each month is gone. Plus, there are no more huge in-game photos like they used to have. Basically, they have turned it into Computer Gaming World of a few years ago except it is much worse now.

Yes, I still renewed my subscription.

This is old news.
A lot of folks on AT have been complaining for a while.
Ever since they started changing the format.

I agree totally about easy on the eye. It was so much nicer than all the console mags and most other PC mags. With those they mix ads, reviews, articles and BS all on the same page. And not even in nice little sections to be readble. More like a dyslexic monkey got a hold of it.

The modern PCG reminds me of those mags. Kind of a mess on each page. You dont know what you're reading until you've seen a bunch of ads. (Which I understand is intentional but irritating nonetheles.)

The quality of articles and reviews has gone down too. Especially since they lost a bunch of the better writers.

I think the main problem was the new editors and management that thought the format needed a spin so they could get more customers.
Which never works. Because people who have decided they dont like it, wont come back. And the people who always liked it, risk losing interest.

END RANT.

Yeah, the new PC Gamer is a total mess and you feel lost at all times. You feel total clutterness, if that is the right word, at all times when reading the magazine. Plus the new text is harder to read.

They took every aspect of the magazine which was good and made it that much worse. I was afraid a few years back that they may ruin this almost perfect magazine, and they have.

The old magazine design had the best reviews around. A full page dedicated to a single game with no ads and no nothing. Huge screenshots and very clean. Simple and beautiful.

Max PC sucks more...

Ever since they gave the iAudio X5 a 3 just because the video format had to be converted....I stopped my subscription

lol, max pc blows anyways.. cheap tricks. I still like pc gamer though.

Agreed. My PCG sub will end when it next runs out.

I too miss the book like thickness of PCG circa the late 90's

It really got screwed up when "The Ved" became chief editor. That guy is such a screw off...who in their right mind would put him in charge?

I'm also letting my PCG subcription expire. The format is now a mess, and its a pain in the butt to read. So long PCG!

What did they give the iPod Video?

The cost-effectiveness of the internet is killing modern magazines.

Anything published and distributed in a magazine is often nearly a month old.

But I still like a good magazine when I'm sitting on the, uh, my throne. 😱

PDA + Ebooks. 😉

I let PCG run out a few month ago. But I am paid up on CGW for the next couple years and still find that it is a pretty good mag.
And Max PC isn't what it was two years ago but it is still the best damn PC mag for more advanced users. Wish it was a little more advanced though 🙁
Only getting four mags right now:
CGW: Paid though Aug 09
Max PC: Paid though June 11
Wired: Paid though May 14 (turning into a movie promotion mag but a lot of the articles are still very good)
Giant: Paid though January 09 (the best new mag I've seen in a long time)

Nothing can replace magazines on the sh!tter. PDA screen is too little to enjoy reading on it.

Maximum PC was interesting in 2000/2001 but they've gotten too commercial lately.
I stopped reading PC Gamer when they started saying P4 were better than Athlons.
I am an AMD fanboy at the moment but lets face it it's so hard not to be.

I think you mean "The Vede".

I don't mind the new format, but I would guess that I'm in the minority.

I subscribe to CGM. It used to be great, though it seemed every hardware review was 4 or more starts - ha! but lately they have been making it thinner and thinner. Used to have 2-3 pages of reader's mail, not it's down to half a page.
