What's to talk about? Glad they got him, finally.

But I'm not so sure on the death penalty part.

Why? He did it. He left a diary in the woods stating what he did. They know he did it, and he murdered a state trooper in cold blood.

The difficult part is going to be finding a jury that hasn't heard the case.

He killed a cop. Death penalty is a near guarantee. No prosecuter will negotiate a lesser sentence for him and he has no leverage.

I noticed his cutup face too. CNN claims he had it when they found him... hah.

It's possible. He probably ran thru a few tree branches when he was in the forest.

He might be sentenced to the death penalty but its unlikely it will ever be carried out. Pennsylvania has executed exactly three people over the last 40 years or so and none in the last fifteen.

PA hasn't legally eliminated the death penalty but it has practically done so.

We will house him for a decade of two (or until he dies of old age) on the tax payers dime instead of just hanging him in front of the court house for free.

I wonder if they'll make an exception for this piece of shit.

While I think this guy is a horrendous human being I hope they don't. First, I don't agree with the death penalty regardless, but more importantly who cares if he shot a cop vs. shooting anyone else? I guarantee you that there have been far more heinous murders carried out in PA over the last 40 years that didn't get the death penalty. I don't like the idea that a cop's life is worth more than anyone else's.

I've gotta say, I agree with eski on this except I do agree with the death penalty. But the reality is he will likely rot to death in prison.

It's not that, if this guy had shot a cop in Ferguson during the height of the tensions there, I would feel very differently.

This guy hates authority and the state, so he hides in ambush and guns down a random cop? WTF is that shit? How fucking callous do you have to be? He planned this out, months in advance. He never stopped to think, 'oh, this guy might have a family, this guy might be missed'. This isn't some guy that walked in on his wife in bed with another man, this was a cold, calculated decision to cause as much grief and pain as possible.

Seriously, I'm against the death penalty in principal, but fuck this guy. I'm sorry if that makes me a bad person.

They really should have shot him on sight. No one would have questioned it. Instead they are going to spend a TON of money on a trial and jail (prior to execution).

We have a disagreement re ever using the death penalty, but we agree on the other points. This guy isn't a Boston Bomber or a Fort Hood shooter. If they get to live, then he sure as heck gets to.

I side with eskimospy on this one.

You are sick. We should never execute people who kill others. Under any circumstance....

He's going to be in isolation for the remainder of his life. A one room cell.

Might look like something like this:

I would also hope they don't make start making exceptions in the quest for justice. Sure, it's easy to call for making exceptions when people commit heinous acts, but then prosecutors look at those tactics for more mundane cases. Look at civil forfeiture - something originally conceived to fight drug kingpins and help cripple their empires now being used to steal from people.

I agree, this is absolutely cold-blooded, premeditated murder. My argument was that there have been lots of cold-blooded, premeditated murders in PA over the last 40 years, many much worse than this. It shouldn't matter if the victim was a cop though.

I can only opine on this case. You might be right that there have been others that are even more deserving that haven't been executed.

+1.

Solitary confinement for life. Same lousy tasteless food every day, every meal. Nothing to read, nothing to see, nothing to hear but your own voice and the voice of your victim(s). Much worse than death IMO.

I agree, but I have no interest in being cruel. If he's going to be allowed to live, he has to be treated humanely.

That it is cruel and unusual punishment and should not be allowed in a decent civilization. Does the constitution mean anything to anybody?
