Yeah so apparently they detected legionella bacteria in our water system, which can trigger Legionnaire's Disease and/or pneumonia. Will my Brita filter be enough to filter it out? A notice suggested drinking bottled water, esp. for those with 'compromised immune systems'. I don't have that, so I should be fine, right?

FYI my apartment shares a water supply with the hospital next door, and that's where it was detected.

No. Hire an army, preferably Greeks, since they won once, and make sure to not give them teh buttsecks.

you should boil the water at the very very least if you had to drink it. I doubt activated carbon does much to biological things.

be smart and drink bottled water till they call all clear. Is your health worth trying to save a couple bucks?

That would freak me out. How do you know you didn't already drink some contaminated water?...

Anyway, yeah.. I'd get bottled water.

The higher end filters probably will get rid of most of it, but you'll still want to boil it at least. You can get gallon jugs of water for pretty cheap, like 50 cents a piece, stock up on a few.

You can get filtered water for 15 cents a gallon at some places. Buy 2, 5 gallon containers until this is corrected.

I drink bottled water at the office. It is just easier to grab it out of the fridge when I want one.

you kids don't remember legionaires disease?

it is named after a legionaires convention in a hotel where a bunch of american legion dudes got mysteriously sick

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/legionellosis_g.htm#1

The bacteria got its name in 1976, when many people who went to a Philadelphia convention of the American Legion suffered from an outbreak of this disease, a type of pneumonia (lung infection). Although this type of bacteria was around before1976, more illness from Legionnaires? disease is being detected now. This is because we are now looking for this disease whenever a patient has pneumonia.

Each year, between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease in the U.S. However, many infections are not diagnosed or reported, so this number may be higher. More illness is usually found in the summer and early fall, but it can happen any time of year.

i guess if you weren't born before that you wouldn't have heard about it on the TV

You are more likely to get Legionnaires disease from inhaling the bacteria than from drinking it. If I were you I'd shower elsewhere till it is taken care of, turn off the airconditioning system, and stay away from the jacuzzi (if you have one).

On the bright side, your chances of getting the disease is very slim.
