Is it just me, or do others think that modern machines have absolutely crap reliability?

In my time I?ve only ever owned 2 PC?s ? an AMD 586 P75 from 1996 with that era?s tech and my modern system from 2001 shown in my sig.

Now the old AMD 586 rig has been though to university and back, plugged into many different power outlets WITHOUT surge protection and basically abused 24/7 (first by me then my brother) and built out of cheap components - yet it still works like a charm! Not one thing has died with that setup. Running Windows 98 with fantastic stability and reliability.

Then there is my 2001 rig. I buy a surge protector, fairly good components and guess what ? it?s reliability is piece of crap.

RIP ? Graphics card, memory stick, PS2 port, Gamepad, HardDrive. And it?s not even a year old! And no I?m not overclocking the FSB.

Anyone else have less reliability these days?

On the contrary, it seems all the power supplies in my old systems died on me after awhile. My newer systems have been running just fine.

Seems to me that my newer systems are more stable.. although, it could just be because I am more experienced in working with them now.

maybe it is s troke of bad luck, components are more sensitive now, and the ever driving effort to reduce cost prob hasan effect on reliability, but how did u manage to loose everything?

I gotta agree with you, my XP 1600+ with a geforce3 ti200 is about to get replaced after only 6 months.

I've lost a couple of floppies and a CD-ROM on my later systems, but my old Pentium 200 is holding up pretty well, considering I got it to run Windows 2000.

Not everything, just those 4 items mentioned in my original post and the PS2 port on my motherboard have bit the dust.

And before anyone asks, no I haven't ever hotwired anything to the PS2 port.

Anytime you go from 5million transistors to 80 million, you are going to have some reliability differences.

Gotta agree with the old reliability. My old 440BX board is still running strong. I can't say as much for any of the platforms I've used since then. Sure they may still run, but I've had to replace more components on them while I haven't had to do anything with the 440BX. Heck, it's an OC'd 300A@450 and it puts the lie to the idea that overclocking has to mean a shorter lifetime for the CPU.

And don't get me started on hard drives. I've RMA'd more drives lately than I've kept, but my older 6 and 12GB drives are still chugging along. Heck, most of these latest drives haven't been able to last a year before crapping out.
