EDIT: FIXED!

Fixed the problem... such a stupid thing.

Turns out that the main access panel on the unit itself came open. One of the latches that locks it closed came loose and the panel opened up, automatically shutting everything off.

---

About two days ago, the thermostat in my apartment stopped working. We hardly ever touch it (we keep it on "auto" on the same temperature 99% of the time), so I'm not sure what's going on.

Any suggestions for what could have caused this? I'm going to call my landlord about it, but I wanted to see if there were any possible fixes that I could do myself and avoid having to wait for him to get down here.

UPDATE: Pics and Model #

Thermostat is a Trane XT300C.

Mine has a battery in it that needs to be replaced every year or two. You have to pop it open to get to it.

In an apartment? Call the landlord. It's their property, let them fix it.

Stuff doesn't last forever, have him replace it. Easy to do.

Yeah. Landlord is coming Tuesday morning, I just wanted to see if the minds of ATOT had any solutions so that I didn't have to wait until then.

the breaker tripped, it's not even getting the 24v from the unit.

tighten the R and W, looks like honeywell is the oem of this thermostat, T6800D.

http://customer.honeywell.com/techlit/pdf/69-0000s/69-1409.pdf <-- this one has a better troubleshooting guide and self test info, not sure if the Trane one might be crippled. I think you just need to get power to the thermostat.

Tuesday? WTF is that.

Tell him to go to lowes; spend $30 and get a new one and install in 10minutes and be done.

Owner's guide in .pdf is here

http://www.trane.com/Residential/Downloads/Manuals/Thermostats/TAYSTAT302C.pdf

Unit gets it's power from the 24VAC furnace circuit. Circuit breaker may be off, power switch at furnace may be off, Thermostat has an internal fuse which may be bad. If you have a digital volt meter, check for 24VAC at the wires coming into the thermostat. If you have it, it is either the internal fuse or the unit just up and died.

Thank you so much for this . I have been freezing for two weeks. The trouble shooting instructions in the thermastat manual had convinced me it was a wiring issue in my 60 year old home. Never suggested there was a safety shutoff at the main unit. Having a repair man come out would of cost hundreds of dollars, when all I had to do is turn a plastic nut on the heater panel a tiny bit and power returned. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is warm in my home again.

Nothing worse than telling the customer you need to replace the batteries...how do you justify a 90 dollar call-out charge? very awkward.

A good hvac person would suggest that when the service call is scheduled with the customer. ;)
