I am about to buy a system with a 2.53 gh p4 and am planning on doing some oc but dont know which HSF to buy... I have heard the Stock hsf is a great one but is there better? I want to only do this once since installing/uninstalling hsf's is nothing less than nerve wrecking... I have been looking at the Volcano 7+ but I havn't seen it mentioned much here..I mostly hear of the Alpha PAL and others.. Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks again.. 🙂
 
i use volcano 7+ it works great, however at full speed it is a little loud. but then again it is suppose to be loud blowing 49.0CFM.
 
i have a 2.53 p4 running at 3.001GHz, stock hsf in an asus p4b533-e.
removed the copper plate from the bottom and used heatsink paste
from alpha, it works great. i play tribes2 all day with no problems,
very stable. have not ran any benchmarks, but my cpu fluctuates
between 114 to 118 degrees when playing games.
 
some ppl have problems with 7+ and p4. I think it was with clip and p4 contact area with heatsink itself.

Im using my 7+ on athlon XP and have no problems at all.

See what other options u have for p4. i recommand reading the Overclockers.com heatsink rating. first. As with most reviews, it will not be a complete guide to follow directly, but it will give u some ideas.

I tried 2 Volcano 7+ on my P4s and had a lot of trouble fitting it snugly on the cpu - I had to file down the four corners and 2 sides before they worked. One didn't quite make it since contact with the cpu was not good enough. It appears that this heatsink is not well made for P4s but very good for AMDs. I replaced it with a Vantec Aeroflow for P4s and the vantec fit quite easily.
 
I am running a Volcano 7+ on my non-OCed P4 2.0a. At the medium setting for the fan (4800 rpm@35db) the fan is not noticeably louder than my case fans. My processor idles at around 24-25C, and at full load goes up to around 32-33C (All depends on my room temp). With the original HSF, I idled around 30C and full load around 40C. I have had no problems installing any Volvano 7+ (I have the older style with the brackets extending all the length of the block. I installed the newer model for my cousin, where the bracket was only half the length). It makes great contact with my processor. BTW, I'm using Arctic Silver 3 also.
 
I've put a few on P4's as well as a few on Athlons. The only problem I had was the very first one I got. For Athlons it came with the clip that holds all three lugs on each side (I guess that makes these the "newer" version). The metal fan shroud on this one unit extended below the bottom of the heatsink so the clip would not pull up on the lugs. Some quick work with a dremel fixed it. I haven't seen that problem on any other one, so it may have been a fluke. For P4, it works well. My only complaint would be the difficulty in removing the unit. Those metal clips really hook into the plastic retainer.
