Thermaltake Tsunami HD chamber question

TT users:

There are five slots in the HD chamber. The bottom slot in under the lowest portion of the intake fan. If I move a HD to this lowest slot, will it be cooled assuming no HD is directly above it?
 
It should still be cooled even without air blowing directly in front of it. As the heat rises from the drive it should be moved away by the air blowing above the drive.
 
I also 'punched' out the metal grill in front of the fan. What about the filter? I was told to also remove the filter, is this a good idea?


ps. I had the HD in the middle slot but it right near the mobo temp sensor.
