What are the differences between the 1889 and 1889-01 models? Most (if not all) of the reviews I've read seem to be on the 1889 model which has the hydro-bearing fan as opposed to the -01 model that has ball bearing fan. Is one better than the other? Does it matter?

Thanks!

I don't recall there being a difference between the two fans. Maybe the 1889 fan is made by someone other than Panasonic? I bought one a month ago and I have the Panaflo fan, so I guess its the 1889-01 model. It's an awesome heatsink.

1889: Panaflo M1 Hydro-wave bearing fan
1889-01: A ball-bearing fan.....dunno who its made by though, but noise levels are quoted as being the same.

I need to double check the model numbers on the two SilentBoosts I installed. The one I bought recently I thought was considerably louder than then one I had before.

What's weird is the MTBF for the ball bearing fan is 60,000 hours on Thermaltake's website, while the Panaflo MTBF fan is only 50,000 on Thermaltake's website for the Silent Boost.

I noticed that, too, but all of the good reviews have been on the hydro-wave model. Also interesting, is that the ball bearing model is a flashing image for some reason on the TT website. I've emailed them this question, too, but haven't received response.

I wouldn't take the specs from Thermaltake. Thermaltake rates the Panaflo (M1A) model as 21 dBA, but the Panaflo M1A spins much faster (2450 vs 1900) than a Panaflo L1A which Panaflo rates at 21 dBA. Unless those slits on the side condsiderably quiet down the noise, I've always called BS on Thermaltake's specs for the Silent Boost.

Having (unknowingly) worked with both the Panaflo model and the ball-bearing one, I could tell the ball-bearing one was much louder than the Panaflo one without even knowing there were different fan versions available.

Thanks for the help. Yeah, the reviews agree with the BS db rating. They seem to bring it closer to 40db, not the 21db TT seems to think it makes. But either way, it seems to be mighty quiet and a good cooler (which i desparately need, as my case isn't much on cooling).

My case currently leaves the CPU at about 58, but once I get the new TT I'll put some arctic silver 5 on it as well and hopefully those two additions will make a big difference.
