Anyone else have any bad luck with this PSU? I just got the Thermaltake Purepower 420W psu 2 days ago. I shut my computer down normaly before I went to work. I get home, and it won't turn on. The green standby LED wasn't on. Plugged in the generic 350W PSU that came with my case, and the LED comes on, so I swap out the power supply and it boots up fine. I wouldn't have expected a name brand PSU to die after only 2 days of use...

Does anyone agree w/ craig? Are thermaltakes bad? Can anyone recommend a good ~400 watt PS for an a64 rig & 4 drives that isn't too pricy?

i have nothing but praise for my thermaltake 480w silent purepower power supplies. they are quiet and rock solid as far as i can tell.
based on that i have a thermaltake 420w sitting around as a backup/spare. hope that it isnt like the one that stevty2889 ended up with.

Newegg reviews seem decent. Mine should be arriving today, I'll post my results when I get home.

I reccomend Fortron/Zalman (Zalman's are tweaked/rebaged Fortrons) 400 or greater watt active PFC PSUs. The Fortron is currently $78 shipped at newegg, which I believe is reasonable for a critical and reusable component. The Fortron's finish at the top in every PSU review around, including anandtech, tomshardware, etc. I love my Fortron/Zalman PSUs becuase they are nearly slient/silent.

the one that newegg sells for $37~ is not PFC. i was dissapointed. furthermore it is not as quiet as people claim.

dowxp: Most of the Fortron power supplies are not advertised as being quiet. None of the models they sell for around $40 are advertised as being quiet. Thus, there is no reason to be disappointed. In fact, if a $37 PS would run all my stuff and not be unusually loud, I would be pleased.

I have thermaltake 420w psu that came with my lanfire case. I only have my mobo, graphics card, 4 fans including a monitor, cdrw, and hdd and whenever i turn on the cold cathodes that i installed last week my comp dies. I'm really pissed off about that.

Well fortunatly I got it from newegg, so RMA'ing it wasn't a problem. I got it in the first place because I thought that the generic 350W psu might be limiting my overclocking potential(computer would not start with FSB at 240Mhz), so I'll just use the thermaltake as my backup psu once I get it back.

I was referring to user reviews -- of course i'm not blaming them. Just dissapointed.

Probably just a fluke.
TT PSU = ENlight PSU = High Power PSU.
The biggest difference between them are fans and grills used.

However, if you don't want to get another one like that...try a Enermax NoiseTaker.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I have a Thermaltake 480 and it works fine. So far anyway. And it is a lot quieter than the PS that it replaced. Unless this one suddenly goes bad I would probably buy the brand again for another case. They have a good reputation overall and the price points are slightly less than Antec.

I'll give them another chance when I get my replacement. Easier to keep the wiring mess under control with the TT PSU at least.

Oh crap...... I just bought my first TT 420W for a friend's computer so I hope this isn't an indication of what the future holds. So far I have done a week's worth of burn in, SETI, Prime95 as well as a few other burn in programs and the rails are all on the + side of normal by about 2% at the most, and they don't wobble one bit. Nothing under the norm at all. Then again I didn't use it in a loaded machine either. It's running an XP2400 with a single HD, 2 opticals with a Shuttle AN35N-Ultra.

I bought one of these about six months ago from newegg and it died yesterday taking out my 250 maxtor sata drive. I read good reviews before I got it. Maybe I had a bum unit but I doubt I'll buy a thermaltake psu again.

Dude, my 480W purepower is incredibly rugged. a couple weeks ago I accidentally shorted out a 3 pin connector that was hooked to the psu while the comp was running. Sparks flew and the computer shut down. I waited 10 minutes and turned the main power off and on and the computer rebooted no problem. Currently I have 3 hd's, 1 graphics card, and 3 other pci cards as well as 5 case fans running with an athlon xp-m at 2.4 ghz and it's totally fine. So far i'm amazed.
