Thermaltake GF4 cooler for 17.99 @svc

i think ill hang back and wait for a few reports on this one.

looks nice - not too sure how much better it would actually be over stock cooling w/ASII tho.

I highly doubt it would make much of a difference. So, you're able to overclock it and get and extra frame or two, if at all. What's the use? 😕

it doesnt say if it actually got more overclock tho 🙁

Pros
- Excellent performance
- Compact
- Very cost effective
- Looks cool

Cons
- Increased system noise <<<- - - dont like that one 🙁
- Power connector doesn't fit into card fan header

I would say if your card already has memory heatsinks on it, just save your $. They wouldn't go much higher with a different heatsink on them.
As for the core, overclocking it will only gain you minimal performance increase, if at all.

Save your cash. Or hack up an old Pentium heatsink and glue them on instead.

actually there are holes for mounting a water cooler on most gf4s.

it wouldnt take too much to tap & mount a big heatsink thru those holes.
even an old fat soc7 HS would fit nice with a 50mm fan.

[edit] heh, hit send too soon...

I'm running my Abit 4200 memory @ 600mhz (default is 500) with no extra cooling. It may help that my front intake fan blows towards the ram, but either way I don't have a need to OC much more than that. The CPU is running at 300 (is that 50mhz higher than normal?), so the whole card is warm, but not too hot. As for overclocking not making a difference, it definitely doesn't do as much as OC'ing your CPU. My 3dmarks went from 7200 to 7600 from overclocking my GF4, and then from 7600 to 8800 overclocking my CPU.

But back to the subject, the Thermaltake set looks like a really nice package 🙂

i really do care much about the heatsinks...of course this gf4 cooling kit is for people who don't have the custom cooling from their boards already...i really just wanted the ram sinks...haha

Hehe... I don't believe those holes were originally meant for water blocks. 😀
But yeah, you can make something out of old parts laying around and it would probably work much better than what these guys are selling. All it takes is creativity.

i remember a little while back - HOCP did a GF4 review.
as it turned out - the OEM cards that didnt have ramsinks ran faster and overclocked farther.

could just be lousy install from OEM, but none the less - they questioned the usefullness of ramsinks on gf4s.

Wow, someone that actually think along the same line as I do on these things! 😀

But yeah, memory and processors are totally different. CPU's are affected by heat and will hinder their switching abilities. Memory are capacitance and are not affected by heat much at all.

Why do you think memory never required heatsinks before? Well, until now, where marketing is pushing itself harder down our throats. 😉

I just know that when i run benchmarks or games the memory chips get really hot...not to mention about the core...of course from the back side...so extra cooling hopefully won't hurt

dude ~ are you completely surprised that i actually took a conservative side? 😉

if its effective id go for it.
if its mild - i coulda spent the extra $ on a 4600 insted of a 4400.

SupermanCK ~ i hope your card is extreamly flat to fit that large ramsink on the chips nice and snug 😉 might wanna go for seperate sinks.

I hope this is the bestest thing in the whole wide world! 🙂
If it gives you a piece of mind, all the power to ya bro.

I'm thinking exactly what thugs is thinking about the 4600 🙂 And I paid extra for a Gainward 4400 that has games I already own! 😛

SupermanCK already has a faster 4400 than me 🙁
(you are using AS on the GPU right?)

im gonna have to do some reasearch on those new 4200 hybrids!

ok not to be a negative nancy here - just wanna provide some info..... 😉

i placed a 120mm 70cfm fan to blow outside air directly on my vid card - i didnt get a better overclock.

<EDIT> ill be more specific...
im 100% stable @ 295x645 w/o a case fan

with the fan i tried...
300x645 = failed 3dmark2k1 6 hour loop
295x650 = failed 3dmark2k1 6 hour loop

here's a pic of my case to see what im talkin about with fan placement.
