durons can vary in o/c speed, ive seen it not go anywhere past 700, and all the way to 1100 (spitfire core)

my duron 750 is at 1000 w/ a taisol

the Drorb 3 is fine enough, dont know if you need the shim though :p

it all goes down to the luck of the draw; hope you have a good stepping!

As far as I know the Dragon Orb should be safe for the CPU core...the shim may help, though, since it sits directly on the core. It would probably be better if you got a SK-6, though...the Dragon Orb has a TREMENDOUSLY ANNOYING low hum which can get really, really mind-wrecking...

I would have liked to go with the SK6 (cash constraints).
My duron runs well at 800 MHz with an el-cheapo heatsink and radio shack thermal paste.
I'm really keen on reaching that magical 1 GHz mark, think i'll make it?
Is there anything to consider when installing the shim?

MadCowDisease,

HOw does a shim sit directly (or even indirectly) on the cpu core?

The cpu Core is only the raised part that comes in contact with the CPU. Everything else is CPU PCB.

You'll be glad you changed the order. DO3 is louder than I expected. Too loud in my opinion to tolerate it or even remotely recommend it ever again.
