Thermaltake Big Typhoon Issues

MDE

Lifer
I replaced the Zalman 7000 AlCu on my overclocked X2 3800+ with a Big Typhoon and my temps have gone up. I've reinstalled it already and I can't figure out why my temps are so high. It hit 54C load with the Zalman, but it's at 56 or higher with the Typhoon. Any ideas?

I had to use the Thermaltake backplate and replaced the fan with a slightly higher RPM fan (1800 vs the stock 1300 RPM), and still no real improvement. I'm using a P180 and the top fan is an intake and the rear fan is an exhaust.

dunno, seems odd that it would perform so well in benchmarks though. Not to say, benchmarks are always right or anything but... Maybe to much thermal compound? Maybe it is all hype ;p

Thats odd from the reviews/tests that have been posted on the web especially w/ a faster fan. Have you done the TIM test? Probably so as I have learned info from your posts in the past 😉. Apply TIM to cold/cool heatspreader, seat the HS, close retention clips, remove and see where the paste is contacting. Could be a concave base. What was your idle/load temps on your x2 w/ the Zalman?

Perfect contact. The Zalman hit 54-56C load (don't remember idle).

Thats an odd one. Haven't seen anyone post here w/ the typhoon that I can remember...would be nice if you could find a fellow user.

Well I just remounted the heatsink for about the fifth time, hopefully this will help.

EDIT: Same temps...
EDIT2: Reinstalled the Zalman and temps are down to 50C...

That Zalman is an excellent HSF. I guess the only thing I would suggest is upgrading the fan on the Typhoon if you haven't already.

Okay, i responded in the other thread, MDE, but again i'll say:

Temps with my Venice 3200+ & Zalman 7000B-ALCu were 10C higher than my X2 3800+ & TT Big Typhoon.

That's 10C cooler with a CPU that should run hotter than my Venice did.

I am extremely impressed with it, & i've seen several people with similar results posting in CPUs/OCing forum.

My guess is that airflow in your case is causing your issue.

The Zalman blows the air out.
The TTBT sucks the air in toward the CPU, or blows in.

I'm guessing the layout of your case doesn't agree with that.

Try this: take off the door on your case, & then test both coolers.

I'm betting the TTBT will be significantly cooler.

Another thing you may want to try is turning your case so it's horizontal and see if that affects temps. It's common for the Big Typhoon to be a little loosely mounted and therefore there isn't very good contact.

I've already taken the side off the case and it didn't help at all.

I've put my case on its side and temps shot up 10C almost immediately. I made 100% sure that the heatsink was tightened down as much as it could have been.
