"MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum NForce3 Ultra Motherboard S939"

I will be running a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512k S939 2.2GHz.

I dont plan to Overclock at this time just looking for reliable cooling that is a quiet a possiable.

thanks!

I'm using a Thermaltake SilentBoost K8, and in addition to extremely easy installation, I think it's working pretty well. My chip idles at around 42C and i don't know what it does under full stress because i built my system the night before i left for a trip and i haven't tested it yet.

But I had no problems fitting the unit on my board, if that makes you feel better. Also, i chose that HSF because Anand used it in their overclocking guide, so i figured it had to be pretty good 🙂

If you read that thread it tells you that one person could fit it no problem with the other person could not.

I know that some shipments of the XP120, at the very start of production, were not guaranteed to work with A64 systems. This could be why. I'm just guessing tho.

I'll find out whenever my motherboard stops being on backorder and gets to my doorstep.

Well that's enough to piss me off.

Will have to see if my retailer will take it back or not. If not I'm sending it back to Thermalright along with their sales dept. email that said it worked. Morons.

Time to find yet another heatsink for overclocking.

Update:

I have successfully installed the XP-120 Heatsink on the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum.

One capacitor is bent big time by a heat pipe but it works. Installed OS on WD 74G 10kRPM drive through SATA1 without any issues what so ever.

Time will tell if that capacitor becomes an issue or not. Lets nope not.

I have an SLK-948u on mine, easy fit, great cooling with a 92mm fan
but perhaps don't go for the 110 cfm delta like ,I did unless you enjoy the sound of jets taking off.
I ended up going down to a 56 cfm 92mm, same noise as a case fan and still great cooling
🙂

I just installed the XP-120 on my K8N-E Deluxe last night 🙂 Awesome heatsink, dropped temps by 3 degrees celsius at idle right off the bat. Once Arctic silver settles in, should be an even better drop.

I almost got the Neo2, until I read that it had issues with this heatsink, so I decided to switch boards.

It's a monster though, takes up a lot of space. And once you install the 120mm fan on it, you can barely see your motherboard anymore 😛 Nothing like a 120mm fan blowing 58cfm at 14dBA for silent cooling.

the SP-97/94 is a very good heatsink too. But it also has compatibility issues.

If you're not going to overclock, I'd go with the Zalman CNPS7000CU. Good cooling, low noise, all copper 😛 Kinda large though. As mentioned, the Silentboost is a good pick too.
