Thermalright XP-120 -- 45C idle?

so ive had an XP-120 for about a month now and its been hitting 45C at stock everything. no overclocks or voltage changes. i dont know whats wrong because ive reseated the heatsink multiple times just in case there was bad contact but i dont know what it could be anymore
 
how much thermal paste you use? 1/2 grain of rice worth in the center of the IHS is optimal. what fan u using on the HS?
 
that is weird, my prescott idles 35 with a 7000b-cu. i only used a grain of rice sized patch of artic silver, and it doens't need any more then that.
 
That is weird, my 3500+ venice which is supposed to run hotter than winnies and it runs 35C idle with an XP-90. Make sure you are using AS5, also what fan are you using. Are you doing any special cooling like having your case open, and whats your room temp? Also what your NB temp, if we know that, we can see if your case/room is just hot, or if its your cpu alone.

No...the Venice runs cooler than any other A64 core. 😉
 
Just remember guys... his ambient temperature could be affecting it too. What are your room temps? I know my 4400+ X2 idles at almost 40 C when it is over 80 F in my room. Cools down all the way to nearly 32 C on cooler days...
 
my system temp is 35C but my CPU temp is 45-47C. i also have a thin layer of AS5 across the whole heat spreader.

Your not meant to spread it out, just put a little grain sized splodge in the middle of the CPU and when you seat the HSF it will spread it out. I know it sounds strange but that's how you do it, if you take the HSF of after doing that you'll see the AS5 has spread out across the CPU. Check out the instructions on artic's website.

Well, I have the same CPU, Heatsink and Fan brand as yours...My CPU is overclocked and overvolted to 1.57v and runs Idle at 38º-40ºc now in summer (warm room ambient 24º-29º). At max load it hits 50º-52ºc. Never goes beyond 52ºc.
At stock voltage, 1.4v, your cpu should not get so hot (45ºc) at idle state...I can't remember which my temps were when my cpu ran at stock voltage but I can assure you it didn't go beyond 42ºc at max load....
 
You guys are not considering the fact that SOFTWARE TEMPS are NEVER exact. Even Identical mobos and processors read different temps. updating my bios the other day changed my idle temps by almost 6c!

You cannot trust your BIOS or speedfan to accurately read temps. Comparing temps with other people is just pointless when there are so many factors that effect your temp readings.

If your system is quiet and runs stable than your temps are OK. But everyone is right about your Arctic Silver 5 - a little goes a long way
