Im about to receive the SLK 947U in the mail, and I was wondering if I would also have to invest in some sort of shim to protect my core. Does anybody have any experience with using or not using a shim in conjunction with installing a SLK947U on an ABIT NF7-S ver.2 motherboard?

Don't use a shim.

The little pads on the CPU and the pads that should come with the 947 will be enough to protect your core.

I have a shim but opted not to use it as there is no real need with the SLK947-U

I agree, a shim is only for those HSFs that clip on in the standard way (one or three hole spring clips) and have no extra core protection. But they do look cool and SVC.com sells good ones pretty cheap. There are even some made of Al and anodized in various colors - if your machine needs some subtle extra bling. I mount mine using a little HS grease so it can perhaps conduct a little extra heat away from the package. If/when I get the new HSF I've been coveting, air will actually be flowing across any shim so it may even help more.

Ok, I just got the SLK 947U. On the X-Plate there is this clear thin plastic sheet (that comes off) which goes between the X plate and the motherboard. HOwever, glued to the Xplate there is this black foamy square. Am I supposed to keep that on? or do I remove that? If i keep it on, the Xplate will NOT contact the thin plastic sheet and will be about 1/5 of an inch separated from the motherboard.

Help please!!

Yes, leave the foam on, its there so there is something soft to cushion the mobo as you put pressure on the plate via the standoffs. Hope that makes sense ;)
