what direction should the fan blow?

1)down on the CPU
2)up away from the CPU

You can test both. If you have a powerful enough exhaust fan right near the heatsink it might work better with #2. But all likeliness do #1

my exhaust fans are standard cheiftec so nothing fancy there. I'll do #1 as suggested.

Don't know about #2, but #1 is working out good for me.
