FYI I noted at Newegg that there was a SLK-800 and an SLK-800A, same price. Wrote the company and was told the A is similar with slight configuration change. I pressed and was told the new model has 4 more fins. Ergo, better cooling, or at least slightly so?

Also, someone on another thread said he got a 92mm fan on it for lower noise, by using the holes for the 80x38mm fans.

I got a 92mm x 25mm fan on my SLK-800 using the 80mm x 25mm holes. There is also a SLK-900 coming out that uses the motherboard mounting holes.

Edit:
It also comes with TIM in a syringe so you can reuse it. The color looks really distorted in the NewEgg picture.

The SLK800 and SLK800a should perform about the same in regards to cooling. The main difference with the A version is that the folds on the fins are a little bit better so as to add more durability to the heatsink. The SLK800 can easily be damaged by rough handling or "squeezing" the fins too hard. Whether this means more fins were added, I can't confirm as I've haven't heard this.

Hmmm so the 800A has a syringe of TIM? If so I think the one I got last week from SVC is an A :)

Anyone know how many fins the A and non-A have in total? Might be worth counting ;)

Hehe well I counted on from the Newegg site pics

Counted each 2x, 35 on the 800A, 34 on the 800. Also, the 800A has notches on the top and there seem to be support beams either side of the copper plate. Anyways, I got an 800A from SVC, ordered and received it last week. It also seems to come with 4 clips, the 800 pic at Newegg only has 2.

My 800A came with a syringe of thermal goop, four circular "pads", and two long pads (for the fan?), and 2 sets of clips for the fan.

Given I have two Alpha PAL 8045s, I'm going to wait till the 900 comes out and Sidewindercomputers says the problem they objected to in the prototype is fixed. I appreciate the option of high cfm-lower noise with 92 mm fans compared with 80.

Unless it takes forever.

What fans do you people use with the slk-800? And do I need to buy thermal paste if i get the slk-800? If yes which paste should I get?

I use the Turbo Cool fan that came with my Chieftec DX-01BD. The SLK-800 comes with thermal paste, but Arctic Silver 3 is better. Unless you are doing some extreme thing, I don't think paying 8 bucks for thermal paste is worth the small improvement over the SLK-800's generic paste.

thanks jarsoffart do you know anything about the sk-7? I hear it performs not much worse than the slk-800.

I'd also be interested to know what kind of fan you can get away with using the SLK-800. Right now I'm looking at a different HSF than my Volcano 9 to try and make my box as quiet as I can get it (barring extreme cooling solutions). Would something like a 92x92x25mm Zalman ZM-F2 (38CFM @ 20dBA) perform well enough on a 2100+? If so, heck, I'll buy two of these things and put them in both of my boxes (have a Volcano 7+ on my Tbird 1.4 in the other box, fan set to low speed).

80mm YS Tech Variable Speed. You don't need to but thermal paste, but if you do I would recommend Arctic Silver 3 :)

regarding the larger 92 mm fan...

if the majority of the larger fan overhangs the fins, why would it give better cooling. I would think that since it is lower RPM it would be worse. The overhang isn't blowing on the fins, so isn't much help. Has anyone actually done a test. Like an 80mm and 92mm at same RPMs???

I'd love to hear the results if anyone with this fan cares to try.

Also would the SLK 900 be even bigger (for 92mm fans) than the slk800 - or is the mounting method the only difference???

TIA

A Panaflo L1A would probably be adequate for the 2100+ on an SLK-800. 24cfm, 21dB.

You think that would move enough air to keep it cool? The SLK-800 is really that good on its own? In that case, I may as well just use a Vantec Stealth fan that I already have (27CFM @ 21dBA), it moves a bit more air with only slightly more noise.

You do make a good point about the how the 92mm fan wouldn't be better then the 80mm fan. The 80mm fan puts air where it needs it most while the 92mm fan puts air where it's not needed very much and doesn't put as much air where it's needed most.

The SLK-900 bolts into the motherboard mounting holes like the Alpha PAL8045 and Swiftec MCX462.

There are people around here running 2100+'s at 2.2GHz with an SLK-800 and an L1A, so a 2100+ at stock speed should be ok. Reality might shoot a hole in my theories, though... don't sue me if it doesn't work. ;)

Well I will give it a shot, and I'll have my lawyers draw up the paperwork if my temp so much as breaks 65C ;)

Thanks for all the info in this thread, folks.

I just received my new SLK from SVC, and there is an "A" model designation right on the side of the box. The packing slip just says "SLK-800", though. I also received the 2 sets of fan clips and the thermal paste in the box.

Well, the SLK-800 plus Vantec Stealth fan combo is a winner. My case is incredibly quieter, and my temps are actually 2c lower than before. Thanks for the info and recommendations, folks.
