Will my old Thermalright SK6 be an acceptable HS for decently overclocking an Athlon XP 2500+? If not, what might be some economical HSFs that would do the job nicely? Let me know if you need more information. Would the SK6 be better than the retail HSF that comes with it? Thanks in advance.

It 'might' be a bit lite for good oc'ing but still okay. Personally, I have the SLK947u with a vantec 92 tornado on my Mobile 2500. I think many would consider that to be the cadillac of air cooling.

It'd work for some overclocking, but not sure how much. I believe the bartons don't run as hot as the older T-breds and so on. You might want to look at finding an slk800/slk800a. I got mine for a good price new when it was on sale, and a used one would probably help you get decent temps.

I have bad case circulation, but I've got my OC at 32C idle, 39C at load and my 2500+ is OC'd to 2.1ghz at the moment.

My 2500+ is running at 3200+ speeds (200 * 11) using a SK6+ (not sure what the difference between a SK6 and an SK6+) and it runs nice and cool (upper 30s to lower 40s in a warm room). However, I modded my SK6+ a little bit by strapping on a 80mm Termaltake Smart Fan using the retainer clips and a special retainer clip I made myself. :D

As for comparing the retail HSF that came with my 2500+ and the SK6+, the solid copper SK6+ wins hands down, even with a 60mm fan. As I said before, with the 80mm fan the SK6+ does a great job.

Agree, I still use my sk6+ when I am testing the spare chips. Works fine w/ 60mm high speed fan.

I've got an SK6+ w/ an 80mm 50.2cfm sunnon fan diagonaly attached to a Tbird 1.33 running at 1.466, and it runs fairly cool and stable and as we all know tbirds put out insane amounts of heat.

Also FYI as long as you use a decent 80mm fan w/ this HS you should be fine, using a lower speed 80mm fan performed even worse than an average 60mm fan, the high speed Delta 38CFM @ 7.5k rpm 60mm fan also worked fairly well but not as good as the high speed 80mm fan.
