Thermalright SI-9XV review

Fullmetal Chocobo

I am basically doing this, because I have yet to see a single review on the intraweb about these HSFs. And that was annoying as hell to me, as I was debating like hell to get one, but I didn't know if they would fit, etc. And I couldn't find any more information about them. So I present my humble review...

Review:
Installation
Well, the second one came in, and I decided to install them both tonight. I was worried about them fitting, but they fit together just fine, and my processors are literally right by each other, so they will likely fit most other mobos. Installation was a breeze, aside from the Ceramique that ended up everywhere. They are a bit heavy, and holding them with one hand while installing the bracket was a bit of a pain, but nothing unexpected. I would definitely give installation a 9/10. It wasn't perfect, due to the fact that having two of them in one system makes atleast one bracket inherently hard to get to...

Cooling
Well, I literally just installed them, so I have yet to wait the 25 hour settling period, but as of right now, they are great. Definitely cooling better than the Swiftech MCX603 HSFs. The UV LED fan on the second SI-9XV is running cooler than when the Swiftechs had a 80mm faster fan on them. So I'm happy about the cooling thus far. I currently have a 11 degree delta (difference) between CPU1 and CPU2, I'm guessing due to the fan difference. I will update this as soon as I get like fans on there. EDIT: All temps are with the side panels off, by the way. I'll be testing how cool everything stays with the side panels on later. I don't think I'll be able to put the side panels on until I get some ventilation modded in anyway...

Updates
02DEC05 / 0132
I'm sitting at idle, and both processors are at 87F. I turned the machine off for a while, and just turned it back on. Very nice. 100% load (with SETI on all 4 procs), CPU1 is 113F and CPU2 is 102F. That's good. The procs stay the same until a load is put on them, and then the 3 blad delta fan really proves itself useful compared to the 80mm thing.

07DEC05 / 1148
CPU1: 92mm delta three blade high speed fan
CPU2: 92mm blue UV fan

load @ speed: CPU1 / CPU2

IDLE @ high: 89 / 89
IDLE @ low: 91 / 91

LOAD @ low: 120 / 109
LOAD @ high: 114 / 105

All testing was conducted with side panels off on both sides, as I believe that I do not have adequate ventilation for all of the fans yet. I'm currently in the process of designing mods to overcome this.

are there any other mountng clips that come with it? or does it just come with one for Intel xeon-type motherboards?

Just for Intel boards apparently. It does come with another set of mounts, but it's for the 800 MHz type Xeons.

I was going to buy these a while back for my MSI K8T Master board. They are nice sinks. Look pretty good on your board as well. Alot of members in our forum are satisfied with them.

Updated with temps. Next I have to swap the delta fan out with the UV fan, and see what differences there are.

Nice. I was always thinking (since owning an XP-120 for a while) that Thermalright should do something like that. If positioned right, it can be right against a rear exhaust fan, negating the need for an additional CPU fan. With all the other "tower heatpipe" units out there this would be a logical progression for the SI series.

Holy sh!t. I installed the second new 92mm UV fan. Was checking out the temps and everything, and my Hardcano 13 starts flashing red and doing this annoying sound. So I'm thinking about all of the bad reviews on it, and how the batteries die, etc. But I checked my fans, and sure as hell the UV fan for CPU #2, the one I had just installed, was stopped. Well, the machine locked up (good motherboard. good girl!!). Rebooted, and my RAID controller wasn't doing anything. Wasn't even showing it was there. Rebooted a few times, nothing. Took it out, put it back in, and it's all good now.

Don't use UV fans for CPU fans. I was wondering about their quality, and I found out today. I will never be getting cheap fans again.

How about another pic or two of your cable routing. Looked pretty slick in the first pic.

And I most certainly will as soon as I get my fans that I will keeping installed and everything. 🙂
