Thermalright Macho HR-02 - outstanding price / performance vs. noise level - $40!

Essentially a budget version of the HR-02, which tends to cost $79.99 without the TY-140 fan.

1. With the stock fan, it is almost 12*C cooler than the Corsair H80 with 2 fans running at similar RPMs. The Macho still produces a lot less noise.

2. With the stock fan, it matches a Corsair H80 with 2 fans at 2000 rpms. However, the H80 is producing almost 55 dB of noise level!

3. With 2 stock TY-140 fans, it beats the Corsair H100 with 2 fans at 2000 rpms; again at lower noise level. A 2nd TY-140 fan can be found for only $13.99. This means an HR-02 Macho with 2 fans will cost about half of the H100 kit and provide similar performance with far lower noise levels. Amazing.

This cooler will probably work extremely well as a fanless cooler for slightly overclocked CPUs since HR-02 performs well under such a scenario.

Thermalright is also going to shake up the high-end CPU cooler market when it intros the budget version of the Archon -- Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140.

I am pretty impressed by this new mid-range priced cooler.

Beating H100 at over 10 dBa less

I was thinking of getting this cooler just for the heck of it when it first came out. But my Scythe Mugen 2 is still going strong so I didn't... It was tempting though.

Wow very nice price for that performance :O. Seems probably would fit the bill perfectly for a 4.5ghz sandy. Will keep this in mind for a future build 😛.

TY-140 is a very nice fan. thinking about picking up a pair to hang off my scythe

Thermalright may soon be releasing an update to the TY-140, the TY-150, a 15 cm version. Although I must say the color combination leaves much to be desired....

it's inside my computer, i'll never see it.

although it might not fit inside :hmm: my scythe kaze maru touches the board and the side panel, iirc

I heavily considered this but amazon had the A70 on sale for $24 AR. At that price, I can't think of anything better. I only can find on site that sells the MACHO and its $51 shipped.

Thinking about stepping up to this from a Hyper 212+. I'm impressed with the initial reviews of the Macho, haven't seen any ~$40 cpu cooler that can cope with that tier of heat output. If anyone knows of similarly performing coolers in that price bracket, let me know.

A70 < $30, highly recommended. Awesome budget cooler but it won't approach the top air coolers at similar noise levels. If you disregard noise levels at top RPMs, and just look at performance, then A70 is great.

Every time I see the Xbit graphs you posted, I'm blown away by the Archon. I assume the only downside is its price, correct? It can outperform a dual-fan Macho using only one fan, which almost makes up for the price difference, and has much lower noise as a bonus.

Any other drawbacks to the Archon? Given its existence, I certainly don't see why anyone would go with water.

I agree. Noise level was not part of my consideration -- I would have definitely paid the premium for the MACHO if it was. I also have a pair of 4870s with the side panel off that will likely over shadow the A70 noise output.

It's 170mm in height. As a result, some cases may not be wide enough to accommodate it.

The Archon makes the NH-D14 and Megahalems look rather "small" in height. 😎

Imho, the Archon, not the Venomous X, is the true successor to the Ultra-120 Extreme.

Very interesting. In previous pictures of the cooler alone, I always thought it was small and thin. Well, it's relatively thin, but now I see that the perspective was off. It's just very tall!
