Thermal Tape: How much residue does it leave?

I was thinking that I would like to put Ramsinks on my Radeon 9800pro, but I don't want to void my warranty. Does thermal tape leave anything behind? Is it had/dangerous to remove?

the thermal tape on the AMD is quite hard to remove. i use a razor and it still always leaves small scratches. thermal adhesive is the way to go

On the AMD what? Thats not tape, it's phase change material.

And I think it was obvious from my post that I don't want to use adhesive, so for me it is not "the way to go"

Bump this up.

I have a similar question that I'd love if someone could answer it for me. I just bought 8 BGA RAMsinks with thermal tape on them for my Radeon 9800 non-pro, whose RAM chips get VERY hot under operation. Will I be able to remove these RAMsinks down the road if I decide to buy some Arctic Alumina Adhesive, or will they be a pain in the arse to remove (and a risk of stripping my RAM chips)? Also, as Johnbear007 asked, do they leave any bad residue?

Johnbear - if you have installed your RAMsinks yet I would love to hear your experience with them so far.

Thanks!

I didnt end up buying BGA ramsinks yet. However I have bought some chipset coolers, and heat spreaders.

I put a southbridge cooler on with thermal tape. The stuff is very sticky and hard to apply, you get ONE chances no repositioning. I also put an extra low profile northbridge heatsink on my Audigy 2 LOL. It didnt get hot, but I had this heatsink and nothing to do with it so I stuck it on. It at least looks cool. The heat spreaders look cool as well, but I doubt they do much. When I have the extra cash ill get some BGA ramsinks as well.

I haven't tried taking anythingoff.

Thats my experience with thermal tape so far. Generally positive, it seems to work well. My south Bridge used to kick off alot of heat and it is noticeably cooler with the heatsink on so I take that as a good sign. It must be dissapating the heat well.
