thermal paste

It's been a while since I've built a system (dual PIII) and those were slot ones with the fan's installed. Now, I'm putting together a used P4 and am wondering about attaching the heatsink/fan to the processor. I take it I'll need thermal paste to facilitate heat transfer? Does the brand matter? How should it be applied?

Thanks,

John

Artic Silver 3 is currently considered on of the best thermal interfaces. The new Ceramique is also supposed to be as good if not better. You can find instructions on how to apply them here. You can purchase AS3 and other materials at SVC. Also, make sure not to buy adhesive, it would make the heatsink nearly impossible to remove.
