Thermal paste required for A64?

Hey guys. I started installing some of my new components tonight, and I was reading the instructions that came with my cpu. It says that thermal interface material is required for all AMD processors. Does everyone apply thermal paste when installing one of these cpu's? If this is indeed a requirement, will the stuff from radio shack work ok, or should I check somewhere else?

Just wanted to add, I bought this retail so it comes with the stock heatsink which appears to have a thermal compound already on it. My question is, do I need some additional on there before installing.

NO. the pre-applied stock stuff works great. dont put anything else on or it just makes your temps go up. but, if you ever take your heatskink off, be SURE to use high grade alchol to remove the pase that is already on, and apply new paste, Arctic Silver 5 is a great replacement.

Ok guys, thanks.

Now I'm trying to install the heatsink but I'm pretty nervous here. From the instructions it loos like I have to push the clips below where the screws are, but it just doesnt feel like it will go down that far. Do I really need to give it a good push? I'm worried about damaging the chip here. Is there anyplace I can find some better instructions for installing the retail heatsink/fan?

do not worry I used a XP90 which is a larger HSF than stock and required alot of force and there were no issues..the heatspeader protects the core fine....just use even and consistent force by placing you hand over the HS

Alright, I finally got it on there. I had to apply quite a bit of pressure to finally get the clamps to stick, but it's on there good now.

Hey question:

How much pressure do you really need to install an thermalright xp-90? Is it more pressure than required for a stock hsf install? So much so that it bends the mobo? And does the xp-90 require a new backplate? I already know u gotta replace the retention bracket.

man....I seriously thought that I was going to break something while trying to put my XP-90 on. It required ALOT of force! I just used the backplate that came with my motherboard, and it worked fine. The retention bracket just screws right onto the backplate.
