thermal paste question

I had to RMA my motherboard after getting my computer together. As a consequence, the thermal paste on the stock cooler has gotten smeared out over the processor but I had to take it apart.

Do I need to remove the old, crusted thermal paste or will it re-adhere properly once it gets going again?

Ideally you would clean off the CPU and heatsink and use fresh paste, but unless you were running overclocks on the edge of stability, you're probably going to be just fine.
